I wish I could by the 2015-equivalent of at 1985 Volvo wagon, with the backward facing third-row seat, but can't figure out what would be today's equivalent. A hydbrid version would be my dream car.
We only have two kids, but do a lot of carpooling and carting around of cousins, as well as roadtrips requiring room for a dog and cargo. I'm trying to avoid a giant SUV or van, as that seems like overkill for our smallish family, but those seem to be our only options. We currently have a Subaru Forester, which has been great, but the lack of a third row is becoming more and more of a problem. Any suggestions? |
| Ford Flex |
| yeah, there aren't a lot of options. I'd say a Mazda5 except that the storage space isn't good with those 3rd row seats up. |
| Ford Flex, definitely. Nice car, too. I've gotten one as a car service from the airport. Like a limo. |
|
I'm with you, OP! I gave up on the 3rd row and went with the Volvo XC70.
An Acura MDX is full size, but not giant, and has a 3rd row. Most friends who really need the 3rd row are going with the Ford Flex. |
| Um Volvo station wagon? |
This. There is also a nice Acura station wagon they stopped making but you could find barely used. I wanted a Volvo wagon but the legroom (front and back) was awful. My husband is 6'4 and my kids are tall too. We ended up with an Odyssey. Yes it's more space than we need but it gets better mileage than an SUV and is pretty affordable even with decent options. |
| We're considering a 4Runner with a 3rd row. |
| Mercedes, BMW, Audi and VW make station wagons. I have one and love it. |

This is your car op:

These are station wagons with a third row:

OP here. Please keep the ideas coming.
The Mercedes is excellent, though way out of our price range. |

I just got an MDX. I love it...
My car two cars ago was a Volvo XC90. I liked it, but I found it to be too low to the ground... It was also my dream car from the time I was a teenager. Weird, I know. I had a hybrid Highlander in between. |
| I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but the newly designed larger Rav 4 might work. |
| Most minivans are smaller than the huge boat of a station wagon I grew up with. Oldsmobile 88!!! I get carsick just thinking about the backwards facing seats. |
