summer team burn out?

Anonymous
Kids burn out because they are conflicted with having fun with MCSL and completing with their club in the summer. They do both, hence the burnout. Pick one. Most are not going to the Olympics or be D1 or D2 or D3. Chill.

There are a few summer teams that have a winter program. It’s not full on USA swimming that go to meets as far as I know but more of a maintenance sort of thing. The Greenbelt MD summer team (swimming in Prince - Mont summer league) has something like this. I think also some of the YMCAs may participate in a summer league but I can’t find out for sure.

We do not do long course. Have not even given it a second thought. Both kids are really looking forward to summer swim.

-Mom of kids who are fast enough for A meets, States, and club championship meets but let’s get real, they aren’t going to get scholarships or go to the Olympics so let’s keep it about fun, social and leadership skills, exercise, and personal improvement.

+1

So true. Most kids will not even get scholarships. Period. Not D1, not D2, or even D3.

If you are doing summer swim, chances are you are not training for the Olympics. Just have fun.

We've always done both....but we are currently frustrated with the disorganized summer team board, summer team drama, bad coaches, or rotating door of new coaches. And it is so much volunteering and such a commitment. It is starting to feel like a burden instead of fun. Anyone else feel like this? We used to love summer team. Parents more frustrated than the kids. Yes, its about the kids- but the parents have to make this such a priority.

I haven't read all the responses to this post but maybe you should consider sitting on the "disorganized summer team board" instead of complaining about it. It takes a lot of work to manage the team and usually only a few are involved in this year round commitment. Have you offered to help beyond just your volunteer hours at the meets?

I believe someone did make similar comments. Maybe you should consider reading the responses, it's only 4 pages.

The amount of work done by swim team board members is hit or miss. I’ve seen some who are absolute rock stars and crush it and do everything and anything. I’ve seen a good majority just try and meddle to their kids benefit. And a decent chunk like to wear a polo and a clipboard to get out of actually having to time or volunteer and do very little work.

This last point reflects a lack of understanding of how much work is happening behind the scenes, off deck to make a summer swim meet happen. By the time that rep or board member is holding their clip board and wearing their polo on a Saturday morning, they’ve spent every day leading up to the meet in preparation. Timing and other meet day volunteer roles are critical, but it’s only one piece of a much broader effort required to execute a meet. So no, it’s not about trying to get out of work. They’re spending countless hours working that you clearly just take for granted.

Do you have any idea how swim meets work? Clearly you don't, so I'm not going to engage. Many thanks to the coaches, reps, data folks, and others for the long hours they put in every day leading up to meets. I do not take it for granted and am grateful for your time.
