I took one look at this and knew the information was dated. I have personal experience with several schools on the list and know that applications have actually gone up, not down, over the last few years. Also, the list includes Amherst, Columbia, and the Naval Academy -- not exactly slacker institutions that nobody wants to go to.
Also, Tech's applications went UP from 19,162 to 20,825 the year after this report was prepared . . . |
| Bad, almost irresponsible, title given to a news story re: ups and downs of college enrollment in general |
| Vatech accepts 70% of the applicants? That seems very high given all the complaints of rejections. |
It depends on which college the student is applying and from which HS. |
Yes, nobody wants to go to COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
What a load of poppycock. |
No, bad journalism and dated . Read the comments to the article you just posted. The story is false. The opposite is true. Parents want VA colleges and the demand is raising the acceptable bar for GPAs and test scores. |
If you look at the info on their website, even engineering is high. 5972 applications and 4325 admitted. They make you do the math yourself, but you can download charts that are specific to department/school here: http://www.ir.vt.edu/work_we_do/demo_enroll/admission/studentAdmission.html |
How can this be a decent school with about 70% acceptance rate? |
Its not. 2014: George Mason University/Acceptance rate 67% James Madison University 60.6% Virginia Commonwealth University 64% |
| VA Tech is not a good school. Is someone arguing that it is? Not saying it's bad - it isn't. It is the state safety school. Step up from community college. |
Why is it then regarded as some top tech school (some claiming it's better than UMD etc.) by people in VA? |
At my kids' FCPS, about 50% are accepted and the average GPA of those accepted is 3.99. It's not really a safety if you've ever had a B. |
3.99 unweighted gpa? |
FCPS only provides weighted GPA. Even weighted, it's pretty high. The handful of kids accepted at Princeton from the same HS have an average 4.08 weighted GPA. |
