http://news.yahoo.com/police-2-old-girl-left-car-dad-charged-172545396.html BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore man has been charged with murder and child abuse after police say he passed out from drinking on Father's Day and left his 2-year-old daughter strapped in a car seat for more than 16 hours in 89-degree heat, leading to her death. Baltimore police arrested 31-year-old Wilbert Leon Carter on Monday hours after his infant daughter was discovered unconscious and with second-degree burns on her body that police say she suffered from exposure in the back of a Lincoln Town car. Carter told investigators he'd been drinking alcohol Sunday while caring for his daughter, for whom Carter said he has sole parental custody. Carter told police that a friend had driven him back from the Dundalk area around midnight and parked on Brendan Avenue. It was unclear where he went after the car was parked. He later made his way home and woke up around 4 p.m. Monday and didn't know where the car was parked or when he'd returned home, according to the charging documents. Carter said he asked his mother and aunt where the baby was, and the women said they thought she was with Carter's sister because they'd seen him come in alone around 7 a.m. Carter's cousin called him Monday evening to tell him he'd spotted the car, according to the charging documents. Carter then found his daughter, unresponsive and still strapped into her car seat. Carter has a history of heavy drinking, and "in the past has consumed alcohol to the point of passing out," police wrote in the charging document. No attorney is listed for Carter in online court records. |
| I saw this morning that a 2 year old had died in a hot car in Baltimore. Poor child. |
| Oh my God what a nightmare. That poor, sweet, innocent baby. |
| Why the hell does he have sole custody when he has a heavy drinking problem? Our system is SO fucked up. |
Maybe the mother is worse. |
| Very sad, esp on Fathers Day. |
Poor baby Her father (and most likely mother too) will never forgive themselves.
I cannot imagine how his extended family felt once they knew they could have possibly saved her. Just sad all around |
Yes, that poor man! He has to live with the tragedy of his daughter dying at this hands on father's day. Because, you know, he has a disease. And that's SO SAD for him - it really wasn't his fault, was it pp? Not for the girl, who roasted to death. Nope, not for her. For the DAD. On Father's Day of all days. |
| It's a blessing for this child. Can you imagine the horrible life she would have led with that POS for a parent. |
don't think for one second she didn't suffer- these deaths are so gruesome that I would hardly consider it a blessing |
| I was wondering why this man was charged with murder when so many of these parents are not. The alcohol explains it. |
| How awful. I hate how the summer brings out of string of similar incidents like this one. Summer brings a change of routine for many families. Leave your purse, wallet...anything in the back seat that you need so you don't forget your child. |
No, in this instance, he should have gotten a sitter before passing out drunk. Not a change in routine. |
| Seems like Batlimore is the new (many years in a row has had this "honor") murder capital - even "unintentional" like this.. |
Um, this "father" was drunk. |
