pediatrician who has experience with vegan babies?

Any suggestions for pediatricians in the DC, Bethesda, or Silver Spring area who have experience with babies who are raised on a vegan diet?

Why would you do that to a kid?

I would say NOT any of the bigger practices that have loads of peds. I have found all to be very traditional in their thinking, which is fine with me, but I'm guessing that balking when I ask a question about a flu shot for a 6-month-old means that going vegan would be a non-starter.

We are vegetarian. The docs at capital medical group have never even batted an eye at it.

Is breastmilk vegan?

My guess is that a doctor from the Indian subcontinent will have experience with vegetarians as well as vegans. Jains are typically vegan.

My other guess would be a doctor in Takoma Park.

If the mother is vegan, the breastmilk is vegan. I think the issue is supplementing as needed. As a non-vegan, I had to supplement DS with vitamins even while breastfeeding. There also was a well-publicized case of a vegan baby dying from malnutrition. To do this safely, I would imagine that a supportive ped is a must, so I commend OP for seeking one out.

Right, why would anyone feed their kids wholesome beans, nuts, fruits, legumes, fungi, grains, etc.?? Sounds like a nightmare! Someone call CPS and get that kid to McDonald's!!!

We are talking about a baby here. I admire vegans for being conscious of the horrors of factory farming etc. BUT human babies weren't made to be vegan! I would go down this road when they're a little older. Just my two cents.

Human babies have lived over time in many environments and climates and are omnivores which means above all else they are ADAPTABLE to different diets. The only constant is that they need breastmilk in the beginning. Beyond that I think OP's baby will be just fine.

No. Breastmilk is NOT vegan and it has nothing to do with what the mother eats! Humans are mammals and breast milk is the milk from a mammal. That makes it absolutely NOT vegan.

Most vegans take issue with something coming from another animal like milk or an egg even if unfertilized.

Yes, humans are mammals, but most vegans wouldn't be opposed to animals feeding their own young.
