In terms of choking, all 3 of my sons have scared us when self directingly feeding (ie feeding themselves). I've heard that if a baby has had reflex, they might be more prone to swallow things the wrogn way - so mabye not true chokign (thank goodness) but close enough it's scary. So, we have a big knife and I chop everything up finely....In terms of the PP who asked about fruits, my older DS had his choking scare with an apple so I've stayed away from hard food for my twins - they'll do blueberries and banana but we only do apples andpears in puree form.

We did a sort of lazy BLW. I started him on big slices of ripe pears around 8 months. At the beginning I would take the skin off. He also ate a ton of yogurt from 7 months on. By 12 months he refused to be spoon fed and at 16 months he's a great eater, will eat almost everything we eat and absolutely adores spicy food. He esp loves beans of all kinds (black beans, lentils, etc) and since those are so soft they're a great early finger food. We never had any choking or gagging issues but I know that is somewhat baby dependent. Youtube has lots of videos of the baby heimlich maneuver if you want to study up.
