The U.S will split into two different countries

+1000000000000

Plus, not to mention, all of us have friends and family members who have different political views. It's not that big of a deal. This has always been true of Americans. We're independent, opinionated and don't like being told what to do. But we certainly aren't going to "split" because we have different options. Let the South be conservative and the West Coast liberal. Out system allows for that, it's a beautiful thing. We are the United States.

Exactly. He won't last forever.

Bah. Russia and China would love that, wouldn’t they.
We’re stronger and smarter than this, people.

See ya suckers!

I'm sure there are anti-anxiety or depression meds involved as well. The funny thing is that this topic has never even crossed the minds of 99.9% of happy, well adjusted Americans.

Happy, well-adjusted Americans don’t watch Fox News and didn’t vote for Trump.

I'd say if war were to happen, it would be more like the Spanish civil war than the last US civil war.

Fed states are closer to the Confederate states than most would like to admit.

It will be more like Yugoslavia / Balkan war if/when it breaks out. Except it will be on ideological lines, rather than religious.

But it will be every bit as horrific and bloody, and it will affect almost every pocket of the country. The police and the military aren't going to stop it, either. For one thing, there's not enough of them. And of them, they themselves are a divided community, too.

I'd say the only way of preventing it would be to confiscate all privately owned guns immediately, and ban all of them forever, but I don't think that would help. The Rawandans killed nearly a million of their countrymen with just machetes
and shovels, in a tiny country the size of New Jersey. Imagine that going on in every US state.

Once it got started, it wouldn't stop until one side was a decisive winner.

Blood lust is a terrible, uncontrollable force. Can you imagine DCUM watching kids being hacked to death with machetes?

I can easily imagine some of the more vitriolic posters here egging such things on, yes.

There is so much hated out there it's palpable.

Not sure it will be purely ideological, since religious issues can't be easily separated from ideology in the red states. And not sure that it would be protracted and bloody. The coastal states and the red interior largely have little perceived use for each other. It's an economic fact that the red states survive on Federal welfare, paid for by the blue statues. The blue states have no further need for coal or foodstuffs from the red states; the blue states might not be material food exporters, but taken in gross the blue states are food-sufficient. There has been progressively less migration from blue states to red states for three generations. Blue states on the coasts would enjoy trade relationships with Canada and Mexico, and the red states would prefer to go it alone. The blue and red states do not share so much, in terms of common identities and practices, to make it essential for the US to remain one country. Only late in the process of separating would the red states realize that they can't manage without welfare paid for by the blue states, and the ideological preferences of the red states will defeat their own economic benefit - just as they did in the 2016 election. The fact is that a divorce would be sensible for the blue states, and ideologically preferable for the red states. It would be sloppy and ugly and it would take a long time, but it need not be catastrophic.

Yes too bad the south didn't exit during the Civil War OP. Then we wouldn't have southern accents, hillbillies, evangelicals and Republicans.
