You don't have to have a milk allergy to have a problem with milk. You can be sensitive to milk which will not show up in an allergy test. The only way to find out is to remove the milk for 2 weeks and then reintroduce it. If there is a problem you will know right away. To find out about any food that is what you do. |
This is a 5-6 year old thread. |
Not mentioned in this thread, but kids with weak muscles might prefer drinking milk to eating food because it's easier. Those kids might also have difficulty with speech because of weak tone. |

As an adult with milk intolerance (which I've always thought was lactose intollerance, but perhaps it's the proteins in the milk and not the lactose?), I can tell you that I've had allergy tests (I'm allergic to tree nuts and also have many allergies to pollen, animal dander, mold, mildew, dust....) and milk never shows up as an allergy.
But whoa is me if I eat pizza with cheese and ice cream in the same meal! I did the whole30 with myself and slept better, could fall asleep easily, stopped having creaky knee joints, and overall felt better. And now that I've added things back in, I'm back to not sleeping well, having creaky knee joints, etc. I knew I was intollerant to milk before whole30, didn't expect that going off gluten, sugar, etc. would make such a difference. So I can believe that if it makes a difference for some adults, it can make a difference for some children. |
Our GI noted that almost all non dairy milks are fortified these days and so far we've given our twins almond, soy, and oat. I would actually like them to be drinking more cow's milk but GI is worried it will exacerbate reflux. |
I would like to see the research behind this. I have searched and found nothing evidence based.

We start GFCF for our son who was diagnosed with ASD 2 weeks ago. Keep our fingers crossed. We keep our hope up since many parents testified that it helps with their kids. GFCF might not work with all kids with autism tho.
Our son had lot of pediasure as recommended by his ped. Not sure this is one of reasons?. He was able to say few words before, now none, only making sound at 3 yrs old. For parents who is doing GFCF, it's not hard if you look from Asian diet perspective. Most Asians eat rice-based stuff and non-diary stuff all their lives. They are fine and pretty smart. Food are easy to cook and cheap. So I am cooking Asian style food. Taking my son off completely diary and wheat-based products. I keep sugar level to minimum, hopefully to reduce to zero soon. As for calcium source, I give him almond milk with chocolate flavor (which keeps the milk sweet enough for him, given that pediasure is super sweet). He loves it. (I tried rice milk, coconut milk...but he seems like almond milk most. So give your kids few options to try figure out what they like. I bake cake for my son without using sugar, only using GF cornbread flour/almond flour + banana + coconut cream +olive oil => very tasty. My son loves it so much. (you can change flavor with different fruits/carrots/zucchini , but thick texture recommended like prune, apple, raisin ...) I make pasta made from brown rice + pureed veggie + tomato sauce => he loves it Learn to cook noodle soups from internet , quite easy with chicken broth + veggie + meats+ rice noodles. All rice noodle has good instructions how to cook/boil them. My son starts loving eating rice noodle. I don't think he misses his pasta or spaghetti. In addition, kids love rice (jasmine rice or sticky/sweet rice are the best) No need to go crazy with GFCF products in wholefood stores which might be commercial and expensive. For snack: he loves all organic fruits apple sauce things + GF pretzets + GF cookies + rice crackers (cookies are most expensive item) All these products you can get from trader joe which is more reasonable than wholefood. Just share with you some of my experience. I am looking into supplements for him like fish oil etc. Appreciate any recommendation of DAN in MD/DC or brand. Thanks! |
Why not get your child tested for gluten and other vitamin deficiencies before going to extreme diets? If your child reacts to a specific food, its a medical/food issue, not part of a language delay or autism. |
My son had a speech delay and had therapy for many years. He is 13 and has always avoided dairy - his choice -- always hated milk, eggs, cheese, butter, ice cream, etc. |
Eggs are not dairy!!!!!!!!!
Dairy comes from milk.... Anything made from milk is dairy... Ice cream, cheese, yogurt, those are dairy!, |
