Taking away milk from non-autistic child with speech delay

Usually they do not show up as allergies, food sensitivities are trickier than that. So, in essence it is tough to get a good read on a casein sensitivity unless you experiment... it is the same with gluten as well

21:44 I would suggest seeing Dr. Layton in Towson, this is the OP and your son's situation seems very similar to ours.

Thanks so much - I took my son off dairy today and we'll see. Do you give your kids any dairy at all or is it all substitutes such as soy, etc.? How long before you noticed any significant changes? I can't even express how promising this is to me. We have been to allergists, ENTs, immunologists in addition to having adenoid removal which worked minimally in the elimination of the mucus. We even discussed at various times as to whether he drank too much milk and that could be the source of problem. However it never came up in our myriad of visits. Our ped expressed concern about adequate iron absorption but never connected it to the speech issue. I pray this helps and will post again. Thanks for all of the helpful information.

We had a good experience working with Dr Mitchell in DC (from the DAN! website), as he and his partner took a holistic look at my childs environmental allergies, food sensitives, as well as oddly enough the influx of yeast in her gut... all to help out with her ASD traits and low speach. Things are getting better slowly, but improving - she is a "slow responder"

Also, you should do some research on this prior to cutting anything out of your child's diet. Kids need calcium and vit D from milk - we use darifree which I order from online, expensive but good. In order for the diet to work as well you need to eliminate all casein, even mixed into things (which is tricky).

I recommend the book; Special Needs Kids Eat Right, by Judy Converse Rd/LD/MPH

Our daughter recently turned three. She has been in speech therapy for a solid year. She is improving, but still about a year behind. I'm ready to make dietary changes, but the commitment needed with the GFCF diet (Gluetin free, casein free diet) is huge! She loves her milk and bread.

Our daughter typically has pale-pale skin, bags under her eyes, suffers from constipation, and is quite susceptible to colds/runny noses. She has had exzema spots but they seem to be gone now. I've heard that these symptoms imply food allergy/sensitivity and that exzema is in the autoimmune family. Is there a correlation with speech delay?

We just had our 20 month old evaluated by Early Intervention yesterday. They suggested we remove dairy from his diet. As a person who has had long standing food intolerances, I was quite surprised at this since my son displays NO symptoms to anything and is NOT autistic. He does not have rashes, has regular bowel movements. I, on the other hand, have very obvious symptoms such as cyst hives. I'm about to discuss this with the pediatrician, but I'm not sure that removing dairy from his diet will improve his speech. My 3.5 year old son was never evaluated by Early Intervention, had dairy in his diet and did not speak until he was about 2. I'd hate to remove the dairy if it really is not going to help his speech. Has anyone had experience like this where removing the dairy did NOT help? Thanks.

In order for you to see the most effects you will need to remove dairy (eating chesses, milks, etc) as well as taking out casiens (milk in foods such as cake, bread, etc).

It has helped us immensely.

Was that in a child that displayed no allergic reaction symptoms and is not autistic? Did you have your child's food allergies tested or did you just remove the dairy??? Thanks.

I took my two month old to the doctor two days ago for regular check up. The doctor and I established that she wasn't ooing and ahing enough even though I speak to her incessantly. Becuase of her reflux and spitting up, wheezing, and recent eczema I decided to put her on soy formula (prosobee) two hors ago. For the first time we had an ooh and ahh conversation for 5 miutes straight!!!! I just keptpraising God.

She did explode everywhere (from her bottom)after her first dose of prosobee. Hopefully this is a one-time thing. I 'm just glad she's speaking! ( had to cut her outfit off it was so soiled) Hopefully she got all the milk based formula out of her system! Praise Jehovah God!

I have heard of doctors suggesting removing milk for asthma. We removed milk for the GFCF diet and it made a big difference with regulation. That said, I am concerned EI would recommend it and I wonder if it's really their place. You do need to make sure you supplement a lot and look for other sources of calcium and we monitor calcium levels yearly. I just hope if EI suggested it they gave plenty of info about things to consider.

Kids DO NOT NEED milk. Cows are not life-time drinkers of milk so why are humans? We have been conned into thinking that we, especially kids, must drink milk for calcium but milk isn't the only source of calcium.

OP, have you researched what is IN milk these days? If you're not drinking raw, organic milk, then it has no health benefits whatsoever. During the processing, all the natural enzymes are boiled and killed. Not to mention, the fact that regular milk contains antibiotics and hormones.

Soy isn't much better because of the homones. Rice milk or hemp milk are a great substitution. Mix some of the chololate hemp milk with regular rice milk and you've got a flavorful, healthy chocolate milk alternative. And if you look at the vitamin content, it's identical. You're not missing anything by removing milk.

I second the PP. My Pediatrician told me that milk today is just a waste. The overprocessing kills everything beneficial. So we had to go off diary following the blood test showing my DD was sensitive and within two to three weeks, stools, communication, and behavior improved. And we had no more dark circles under eyes and running nose and none since then. Now just last weekend I accidentally gave her something with dairy, and I had a terror on my hands for three days. This happened last year as well. I gave her chocolate and it was an immediate setback.

So if you remove the dairy and speech improves can you re-introduce dairy back in at a later time?

Kelly Dorfman recommended my DC go off milk and she suggested liquid vitamins for my son who had speech problems, reflux, chronic sinusitis, OT issues, asthma and eczema. Guess what? He responded immediately and his behavior drastically changed, for the better, once he was off all the steroids, antibiotics and asthma preventatives. He even had surgery and developed a resistance to an antibiotic. Was the final act of taking him off milk in addition to these other strategies what worked or maybe it was a milk sensitivity (since breastfeeding really) all along. Miracle.
