Are there tent encampments and violent protests there?

It's horrific the way some universities are clamping down on free speech and non-violent protests.

The Pro-Israel lobby is incredibly powerful here, even in the face of genocide perpetrated by Israel.

That being said, such protests and overreacting by administrations wouldn't stop me from sending my kid there.

Jewish kids celebrating Seder at Columbia yesterday. I guess they feel safe.

As evening fell over Columbia’s tent encampment on Monday, about 100 students and faculty gathered in a circle around a blue tarp heaped with boxes of matzo and food they had prepared in a kosher kitchen. Some students wore kaffiyehs, the traditional Palestinian scarf, while others wore Jewish skullcaps. They distributed handmade Haggadahs — prayer books for the Passover holiday — and read prayers in Hebrew, keeping to the traditional order.

Exactly. The safety issue is blown out of proportion.

Anyway, let's assume that the safety concerns are true. Do you really want to give up your kids' hard-earned admittance to a great university because some protestors are causing problems? I'd say no. Don't retreat and don't hide.

Honestly, I’d rather my kid go somewhere less chaotic. Life is hard enough without running towards a pile of crap.

Yes there are. Don’t you follow the news?

Anonymous wrote:So long as your child isn't Jewish, I'm sure they'll be fine there. It has great departments and a real commitment to its students. If they are Jewish, just have them remove any signs of being Jewish and keep very quiet about it. Don't even have them tell their roommate. Do all that and your child will thrive there.

Keep in mind that many students move off campus to the surrounding areas after freshmen year.

Many Jewish kids are participating in the protests

You don't even know what an actual "violent" protest is.

This is correct including a student group called Jews for Peace.

FWIW, I was a professor at Columbia and Yale. It is difficult to get B's at Yale, because only 11% of students get them. But 79% get A's or A-minuses. Columbia is similar.

This is NOT true for at least STEM classes at Columbia.

I would transfer DS out, if he attended Columbia.

But he wasn't admitted.

Absolutely- but also remember Robert Kraft is stopping his donations to Columbia- this type of decision effects all students

There is one week left in the semester.

Not sure what will happen with exams and graduation though.

Agree.
