Psychological treatment for medical trauma for former Micro-preemie

Anonymous
Can anyone reccomend a clinician (child psychologist, play therapist, etc.) who treats the psychological affect of medical trauma?
Please know I'm not interested in an evalution unless it required for treatment.
I have found a handful published article saying that PTSD exists for former NICU babies, but I havnt found much around treatment. Suggestions?

A good therapist can deal with PTSD, anxiety, etc. from any cause. I would look for the best therapist possible, the most skilled with children, without necessarily a specialty in micropreemies or medical trauma. I think that's too specialized to be a client base. Play therapy is a great idea. It's very helpful for young kids.

OP here

Ive worked in the adult community mental health system for over 15 years in standardized of care, and sadly I haven't found that to be case.

I've interviewed/met with 5 different practices and brought my DS to two (the first one wasn't a good fit). Out current her play therapist has been the most effective and the most knowledgeable (and my son adores her) She has also been looking for rescources and practices that specialize in medical trauma. There is a center out of UPenn that specializes in it but they serve children with medical trauma where he child is able to remember what happened. I'm going to contact them today.

I would rather try to find someone through word of mouth. I find people who have seen the clinician themselves often have better feedback and an "expert".

How old is your child and what are you worried about specifically?

OP, are you sure you aren't looking for trouble where non exists? I had an experience that commonly results in PTSD. It didn't for me. A lot of people just assumed I would have it and treated me as such. Really annoying.

Does your micropremie have PTSD or do you?

OP, I remember a post a little while back asking about this. (It might even have been you.)

If you haven't already, I would see if NIH has any clinical trials in this area. I've some people who were able to get help with issues that be more rare. GL.

That's a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion!! I havnt had much success with children's and I've submitted my application to Kennedy Keiger Neuro Behavioral Services. KK has been responsive but we don't have a date to meet with them yet.

NIH never crossed my mind. Thanks.

Depending on where you're located, OP, Maya Coleman might be a great fit for you. She's an outstanding child psychologist with experience in very early childhood and also with trauma. If she's not the right fit, she could give you a referral. She's in Mt. Pleasant.

Good luck.
