Wells Fargo issuing a new debit card every 6 months?

Anonymous
They send me a new card a couple of times per year and tell me my account was flagged for possible fraud. Changing all of my autopay and online shopping sites is annoying. Is this a Wells Fargo issue or a vendor data breach problem? Anyone else having this problem?

This is a problem of today. We have done the same and we do not have Wells Fargo. I received a new credit card from the Target breach and a new one with BA for something else- same card. I anticipate receiving a new one with the Chase breach on my other card. DH's SS# and other things have been compromised and it looks like someone tried to file his taxes for him last year but did not get very far. Just far enough to create a bank account and over draft it (in his name) $50 buying turbo tax and something else. We file extremely early and it looks like ti was worth it this year.

its a merchant issue it.If it were the banks fault all of their customers would get reissued cards. Data breaches are so common these days and the merchants at fault are pretty common, so expect this to continue. The only way to prevent this is to use cash . we all know that it's not convenient. ...

I work in the fraud department at a major bank fyi

Is there a prepaid debit card that doesn't have a lot of fees? I could use that for shopping.

It's a Home Depot issue, this time.

Yep, we are getting new cards, different bank, for the third time in the last 12-months and Home Depot is the latest reason.

I forget to switch autopays too. Thankfully those "your card was declined emails" always get my attention. my husband, missed them for his Smart tag and that was a headache.

I use Amex. Their fraud protection is amazing. They call the second something is happening.

Ditto. I have a Wells Fargo debit card, but the same one I've had since they bought out Wachovia years ago. I don't use it for purchases. The purchase protection on debit cards is far below that of credit cards.

I've had a Wells Fargo (Norwest Bank) debit card for over 25 years. They have only ever sent me a new one when the expiration date ends. But I rarely use my debit card at stores, only ATMs. Mostly use an American Express card at stores. Every place you use your debit card is a potential breach point. So they more you use it the higher the chances one of those vendors or an employee of the vendor will steal/sell your information.

A technological shift is needed to fix this issue, and banks/merchants haven't made it happen. The chip-and-pin method used elsewhere is much more secure because when you make a purchase, you aren't providing the seller with *all* the information they need to make further purchases on your account.

For some reason there seems to be wider support by US banks for Apple Pay -- because it uses one-time codes and doesn't reveal your account number to merchants, it is much more secure than the current system. Apple managed to convince the banks it is secure enough that the processing fees are the same as if the card is present.

But it'd be a shame if you had to buy an Apple product to do secure transactions. I hope the industry steps up and creates open standards for secure payments.

OMG 2 days ago we got our card maxed out at a Western Union in Nebraska. This is the third time our Wells Fargo Info was compromised. We will not be getting another Wells Fargo Card.

Not only that but the law needs to be changed to afford the same protections to debit cards as credit cards.

OP here. If it's a merchant issue, changing cards will not reduce the risk.

I've decided to start carrying more cash around. I probably will buy a prepaid debit card this week and get a new one every month or two. My online purchases will still be on my bank card. I hope these steps at least reduce my risk in future data breaches at major retailers.

I literally just closed my account because of this.

I use Wells Fargo ez-pay card. I only load what I need, it does cost $5.00 a month-but the rest of my finances are protected.
