I have a question for both of you,

Are smart kids still considered nerds and uncool?

Are kids generally nice (civil) to each other or there serious divisions amongst the cliques? Just curious to see if/how things have changed

I think it really depends on the kid. In general, no, the smart kids are nerds. But at my school, the smart kids are also the ones who are the class president/athlete/club president type, so that lends itself well to not being considered a nerd. Sure, there are some very smart kids who would be considered nerds, but I think that might have more to do with their social skills (or lack of...) than their intelligence. No one is considered a nerd simply because they're smart.

Your second question: Personally, I go to a school with about 120 per grade. There are certainly friend groups and a social hierarchy, but we all coexist together pretty well. And it's all-girls, so there's kind of the "sisterhood" aspect, too. But I'm sure it's different at the bigger schools with 400+ kids per grade.

That's good to know (re smart kids) but it seems that you go to a smallish private school where being a high achiever is more common than not. I wonder how that would change at a big public school. I graduated with a class of 600 and DH's class was over 1,000. I'd imagine that alone would give you a totally different experience.

Yeah, I think it totally depends on the school. And what kind of crowd you hang out with.
