What I've read and liked:
Glass Castle Chosen by a Horse My Lobotomy Bossy Pants Stories I Only Tell My Friends Running With Scissors Any other ideas or interesting people I should look into? |
|
Wasted - Marya Hornbacher (she had severe eating disorder)
Until I say goodbye - Susan Spencer Wendel (woman who came down with ALS and decided to maximize her time before becoming paralyzed) The Broke Diaries - Angela Nissel (broke college girl who gained an internet audience blogging about her escapades) Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot (bio, not a memoir, but it really is good. About a woman who died years ago whose cells were harvested without her families consent.) The Corner - David Simon (Tells the story of a particular corner of Baltimore, marred by drugs. Inspired the Wire. Very gritty) |
|
John McEnroe - You Cannot Be Serious
Andre Agassi - Open Mark Salzman - Lost in Place (LOVE this book; I've read it a hundred times) Mark Salzman (again) - Iron and Silk |
| The Road From Coorain--Jill Ker Conway |

I second "The Glass Castle." That book simply amazed me. One of the best books ever. Ever.
I love memoirs OP. I am addicted to them. My favorites include: Elizabeth Smart, A Child Called "It", Kris Jenner, Corey Feldman, Rob Lowe, sTORI telling, and Naomi Judd. The reason I listed the above specifically is because they are juicy and do not hold back. Oh one more...The one by Madonna's brother is excellent. He tells everything about Madonna in it. Can you say juicy? |
| Ruth Reichel and Julia Child. |
|
Drinking: A Love Story by Carolyn Knapp
Wasted by Marya Hornbacher is another good one a PP mentioned I bought the Tori Spelling one from a $1 discount table and read it. It was kind of entertaining. |
| Katherine Graham's Personal History. |
|
Read the one about Marjorie Merriweather Post. Absolutely fascinating but a long read.
Also, the one about Evalyn Walsh McLean, the last owner of the Hope Diamond, and longtime DC resident. I can't believe someone hasn't made a movie about this yet. |
| "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me" Mindy Kaling |
| Also, although they aren't entirely memoirs, any of David Sedaris' books would be good. |
| Hmm, some of these sound kind of like biographies, but I haven't read them. I loved "Eat, Pray, Love", Stephanie Klein's memoirs, and "Wild". |
| I also really like travel and cooking memoirs, even though I don't do much of either. |
| Wild. Like a combo of the Glass Castle and A Walk in the Woods. (A Walk in the Woods is also amazing.) |

Lit by Mary Karr.
The Night of the Gun by David Carr. I read a lot of memoirs and these two are my favorites. |
