IVF...no heartbeat at 6weeks, 3 days

Anonymous
I just had my 1st post-IVF ultrasound yesterday and we were able to see the gestational and yolk sac. We spoke to the doctor and she said everything looked great and that it was very common in IVF patents for them to be developmentally behind at first, and she noted that developmentally we were at 4 1/2-5 weeks and that we would catch up. She didn't seem concerned at all, and we'll go back for our next ultrasound at 8 weeks. I stumbled across another post on this board that now has me concerned that we didn't see a heartbeat. Has anyone else had IVF and heard this?

Thanks!

I didn't have IVF, but it took my doc about 10 minutes to find the heartbeat at 12 weeks, and she was about to give up when she found it. It was a long 10 minutes, but she said it's common not to be able to find the heartbeat easily at that point. So I would think it would quite a bit more difficult at 6 weeks.

Good luck!

Not sure, but we saw two heartbeats at 6w5d. I would trust your doctor because I don't think she would give you false hope. We had a previous IVF that started with low betas and they never gave me hope that it was a viable pregnancy, which I appreciated.

Best of luck to you.

PP here again, sorry -- this wasn't an ultrasound, just doppler, so I'm not sure how relevant my post is, but I hope that someone with IVF is able to reassure you!

Hi there.

I'm not IVF but before I had my own first u/s, I was warned to wait until 8 weeks because at 6 and even sometimes 7 weeks, they just can't see baby yet. Sometimes they can only see the sac, sometimes they see a "fetal pole" and in some cases, they see the fetus (or embryo -- I think they call it at that point?) If you're really worried, ask for another u/s in a few days. Baby is growing baby leaps and bounds and you should be able to see him or her very soon.

Don't sweat it too much, though. Most doctors don't even try to look until 8 weeks because of the scare it gives new moms when they can't see anything.

I've had five positive pregnancy tests from IVF. Twice, I didn't ever get to see a heart best. Here is my advice.

It really is too early for to draw conclusions. But if you must, then be guided by your hormone levels. Are the numbers doing what they should? Then you'll see that heart beat -- just give it another week. If your numbers are leveling off, then you may be in for bad news. Good luck.

Hi, I'm the OP. Thanks to you all....my numbers are good...beta was 2013 (or something like that to that). I'll call the doc in the am and try to get in sooner just to ease my mind, hopefully.

Thanks!

It MUCH harder to find a heart beat with doppler than with ultrasound, for whatever it is worth. If I remember correctly, they often say you may not hear the heart beat with doppler before 10 weeks, so I would not take the lack of heart beat at 6+ days to mean there isn't one, or the pregnancy isn't viable. I had my first ultrasound at 5w 6 days, and you could not hear the heart beat, but could "see" it. I am now 31 weeks. I wish you the best.

Hi,

I am not OP but I am also 6 weeks (and 6 days) pregnant (gestational age) from an IUI. I am curious to know how many betas you had done after the positive result to check if the numbers were doubling?

I only had 3 betas total, last at 19 DPIUI and I am so concerned. Frankly, I would love if my doc had requested betas every 48hrs until the u/s. I am sleeping so poorly lately, max of 3, 4 hrs per night - having nightmares about miscarriage.

Tia.

Tia -- This last time, I think that I had 3 betas done in the first 7 or 8 days. Because the numbers were doing what they should, we then switched to checking each week for the next 3 or 4 weeks.

You say that you had 3 betas already, which should certainly give you some indication of how things are going. If you really need to know more frequently, then ask your doctor to have you tested more often. Good luck to you. I've been where you are and I know that it's hard to be patient.

there is no possible way to hear a heartbeat with a doppler at 6w3d and i'm surprised your doctor even tried!!! it would require a transvaginal ultrasound and even then you might not see it at this gestational age. i'm sure it's fine, OP. keep us posted though.

I have heard that you should not go in to check on the heartbeat until you are 8 weeks pregnant b/c before 8 weeks, it might not be possible to hear the heartbeat even though everything might be fine and that leads to a lot of confusion. Best of Luck to you.

OP had an ultrasound and they did not see the heartbeat. She did not have a doppler - that was another poster.

I did not have IVF and at 10 weeks my midwife could not find a hearbeat with the doppler. I had to wait to wait two more weeks for the ultrasound and hearing that heart beat at 12 weeks was such a relief! Longest 2 weeks of my life. I now have a very hearty and healthy boy. It is too early, but I understand your concern-the waiting is horrible. Best of luck to you.

Lots of people posting about doppler, which is nice but not relevant to OP... She is worried about lack of seeing heartbeat with ultrasound, so I'm worried some of the doppler replies will make her feel worse. OP, it's very common not to see heartbeat at your stage even in a non-IVF pregnancy and from what I've heard, sometimes IVF babies are a little bit slower in the initial, early development phases. Please try not to worry... Chances are very good that you can go back in a week and see that heartbeat.
