Federal Agencies matching salary?

Anonymous
I am currently working as a contractor at a Federal Agency and my annual salary is $126K. The office I am working in has posted a GS14 position that I am considering applying for (and have been encouraged to do so).

If I were to be selected, would the office be able to match my salary? From what I see here - https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2013/general-schedule/washington-baltimore-northern-virginia-dc-md-va-wv-pa-annual-rates-by-grade-and-step/ - that would either be a GS 14, Step 7 or GS15, Step 2. How do government agencies typically handle this?

Its complicated. The matching program is somewhat weaker than it used to be. They'll need to see if they can categorize your previous experience correctly to get you up to the requirements of that step. If you've been in the workforce for a while or have advanced degrees, my guess is that they'll be able to find a way to do it if they want.

They would try to give you the GS-14, 7 and come close to your salary. But remember you won't see pay increases (steps) except a few years down the road.

My agency is planning on eliminating our contractors and hire as GS employees because it will cost the agency less (you are probably costing the agency $175K with your companies cut and benefits).

Might depend on how much they want you. My office started hiring people at step 1 no matter what to save a bit more on salary costs given how tight the budget is.

You almost certainly will not get a grade increase but a step increase to try and match your current salary is possible.
