Domperidone. Why or why not?

Anonymous
For some unknown reason (I've worked with several lactation consultants) I can't make enough milk. Both suggested domperidone. Why or why didn't you decide to take it?
Anonymous
I took it because I read lots of stories from other moms who used it and they felt genuine and I looked at the actual side effects and risks of the drug and made a judgment call.

I decided against it because it isn't FDA approved and I think formula supplementation is the safer bet.

I decided against it because it's not FDA approved and I don't think it's worth taking a risk with my health just to keep my son from having a bottle or two of formula a day. There are benefits to breastmilk, sure, but a) formula is still undeniably safe, and b) you likely get all the benefits of breastmilk if you're having mostly it even if not having it exclusively.

Also OP you might wanted to consider joining the FB group IGT and Low Milk Supply. Lots of crazies on there, but some worthwhile information too.

I used it and had no side effects at all. It started working at the very first dose, I would have dried up without it for sure.

The issue isn't short term side effects but long term damage to the heart and other major organs.

Not. Because a few more ounces of breastmilk for baby is not worth possibly impacting mom's health. Seriously, the breast is best nazis are really winning if women seriously think that taking a medicine with unknown consequences is preferable to formula.

What damage to organs? (Any evidence of this?) It's a GI med for kids, it's just not FDA approved for the purpose of bf since that is only a side effect.

I used it and I think it helped with my supply. Not a huge amount, but it made a difference and got me over the hump. I was scared to wean myself off of it for fear my supply would crash, so I used it longer than I had planned. When I stopped using it, it was fine and I nursed for a long time after that. Side effects for me were weight gain and it made my tsh level go up (it took me awhile to realize domperidone affects your thyroid. There's not that much info out there about that as I recall). My tsh level normalized very quickly once I stopped taking it. Took a little while for the weight to come off (I'd never previously had trouble with my weight).

Not sure at what point postpartum you took it, but thyroid fluctuations are extremely common after giving birth and in the first few months of breastfeeding, regardless of medication usage. This complicates the ability to asses the relationship between Domperidone and thyroid issues in breastfeeding mothers.

No not FDA approved and not safe to import drugs. A healthy mom is mOre important to your baby than a few more ounces of breast milk!

I took it and it doubled my supply. It is available OTC in other countries. I had no side effects accept for maybe a bit of loose stools. The benefits far outweighed the side effects.

The only pain was that it took forever to get it from the Canadian pharmacy I ordered it from. For baby #2 I'll be ordering ahead of time. It was much cheaper than getting it at the compounding pharmacy.

I read a ton before I decided to go this route, also at the suggestion of a LC. Never did I come across anything saying it causes organ damage! Does the PP have any references?
