2024 Boys Private School Results /Game Schedules/ Commentary

While I might have been slightly wrong tonight about the Eagles and how well they would handle two games in a row, any one who was at the game tonight knows that Gonzaga was giving it to the Bears for the entire first half. It was clear that when the second half came around the Eagles didn't have much left in the tank after the game yesterday against Good Counsel. Although it unfortunately will not happen anyone here being honest with themselves knows that a well rested Gonzaga team wins that game handily.

I will give credit where it is due though, the Bears goalie stepped up in a major way in the second half. Even though him and his team had some struggles to clear the ball he would go right back to standing on his head. Congratulations to everyone on a well fought game I wish both teams could have been well rested but that just the way life goes. For the Eagles its on to the next and looking forward to seeing them kick some cadet butt on military road soon

bears spotted eagles the first goal, there was the questionable crease/kicked ball, and then the refs waved off a Landon goal, and should never have gone to OT.

Landon made some serious halftime adjustment's to get themselves back into the game. At one point, Gonzaga led 7-1 in the quarter, 8 to 4 halftime.

I thought both goalies played exceptional.

Landon appeared to have more overall depth than Gonzaga.

I guess PVI stopped being a religious school?

It's hard to play sports when you have one hand wrapped around your own neck. #purplegagged

You sound like a delusional homer.

Landon forgot to get off the bus from Bethesda as they looked totally out of sync in the first quarter. The Bears couldn't win a face-off, couldn't pick up a ground ball, and couldn't clear. The Eagles dominated possession, leading 4-1 after the first. Two of Gonzaga's goals in the first quarter were hockey-type goals - loose change around the net.

Things didn't look much better for the Bears in the first half of the 2nd quarter as the mental mistakes continued to mount up and the Eagles raced to a 7-1 lead. Midway through the 2nd, things gradually began to change as the Bears settled in and quickly made it 7-3. It was 8-4 at halftime and you could sense Landon was starting to wake-up and we had a game brewing.

Hats off to the Landon coaching staff as they clearly made some adjustments at halftime, and figured how to break Gonzaga's suffocating press/ride. Gonzaga scored a goal within the first 10 seconds of the 2nd half to make it 9-4 off a face-off break. From this point on, it was all Landon. I believe it was 10-7 Gonzaga going into the 4th and you could sense Landon had the momentum at this point. Landon dominated the 4th quarter and made it a 10-10 ball game with less than 5 minutes left in regulation. Gonzaga never got the ball in OT as the Bears scored pretty quickly.

A few observations...

Gonzaga managed to score only 3 goals the entire game from the 8-minute mark in the 2nd quarter.

Landon's offense is patient and can break down a team defense with the various schemes they run.

Both goalies were excellent.

The Bears deserve a ton of credit, not many teams can dig themselves into a 7-1 deficit, and have the grit and will to fight back.

Save the tired legs BS excuse as Landon showed they were the better team post-first quarter.

Take away the two garbage goals Gonzaga scored in the first quarter and add-in the goal which Landon has called back (total BS call), the first half is entirely different.

Landon woke up and dominated the entire 2nd half - controlled the pace of the game. Bears offense has some weapons where as Gonzaga as one guy you need to lock-down. Game should have never gone into OT to begin with.

On a different note, Gonzaga will have its way with SJC.

Not so sure about that final claim.

Shoot low often on Gonzaga goalie and you can score easily.

St. John’s gets Gonzaga at home. I think they upset them but Gonzaga wins in the Championship unless 4 returns.

Gonzaga is better than SJC.

SJC has zero good wins this year

I got to go to the game last night. That’s was as good as it gets.

I didn’t get the sense that Gonzaga was tired. They rode just as aggressively, and got some really good looks in the second half that they just didn’t finish. They just couldn’t score. Hit a few pipes, missed the net, and couldn’t beat a goalie that was seeing everything.

This game could have gone either way. Gonzaga hit the post twice to end the first half. Couple low angle shots that the Gonzaga goalie got a piece of. On the other end Landon had a goal waved off and missed some really good looks. Not to mention the weird goals to start the game.

2 great teams. I got the sense that Landon was the better team, but Gonzaga should have won. They had Landon shellshocked and could have blown them out without great goalie play. But once they let Landon back into the game the whole stadium could feel Landon was going to win (and that was in the 3rd quarter).
