Involuntary eye rolling/blinking in 21 month old toddler boy

Anonymous
My 6 month old, started rolling his eyes 2 months ago and he has just been diagnosed with paroxysmal tonic upgaze, they did 24 hours EEG and didn't find anything. He rolls his eyes for 1 or 2 seconds 15 times a day, at least. he has no other problem, like movement or anything. Drs said no medication and no treatment exists for this condition, so i hope he get better!

Can anyone post an update on this and what has happened. Had it gone away / got worse / received a diagnosis? My daughter has been experiencing the same for the last 8 weeks, on and off. Started with a case of bronchitis at 14 months. Has had a normal EEG and abdominal ultrasound and eye exam.

Could any please tell what happened after seeing a neurologist. We are going through the exact same. We came to the ER and are being under observation, mommy is freaking out. Some feedback would be greatly appreciated

Also interested to know if anyone has a long-term update. My son started periodic eye-rolling at 15 months, and it progressed to the deliberate blinking and eye-shutting, and now at 23 months we are seeing eye fluttering (eyes roll back, eyelids flutter quickly). Always short (a few seconds long), he always snaps right out of it, sometimes it will repeat a few minutes later, but it really only seems to happen a few times a month. No apparent motor or developmental delays.

We have done a 24-hour EEG that showed nothing. Neurologist is concerned - especially that it has progressed to flutters - but not overly so. Says we can do another EEG or watch and wait.

Hi, any updates on this subject? How is your kiddo now?

If you can take a video for the doctor to watch. It might be hard to catch, but a video will let them see it if he doesn’t do it in the dr office.

Keep an eye out for "absence seizures" too - basically staring off in to space for a brief or long period of time, but really being not there if you try to interact. My friend saw this with her toddler and took him in and pushed the issue. he indeed had a brain condition - thankfully manageable and will live a normal life but only because she caught it early.

Hey PP, I am not the OP but this started happening to my daughter about 2 months ago and I found this thread when searching for information. It always happens in sunlight, which I assume is the trigger. She has light blue eyes. She did have an EEG two weeks ago, but have t heard back yet. We’ve probably had 12 episodes or so in two months. Very bizarre. I called the ped today about the EEG, so hopefully will update soon!

Is there any update on this? Same is happening with my son at 18 months. Waiting to see a specialist but they don’t think it’s a seizure. Think it could be complex motor stereotypies

As a blue eyed person, I can tell you that sun light can be intense, however little ones need to be protected with hats with brims or sunglasses if they’ll tolerate them.

Same PP back again. No abnormal findings in the EEG. We did have a full eye exam. The consensus was her blue eyes were letting too much light in and that they were rolling back almost as a protective mechanism.

They happened pretty frequently for about three months and we haven’t had an episode in a month. Very bizarre.
