Involuntary eye rolling/blinking in 21 month old toddler boy

Anonymous
Just posted on a similar topic a week ago (4 year old blinking excessively). You may want to check out the replies. I am so sorry you have to go through this. Whether it is transient or something more, the not knowing is grueling. I am right where you are. Trying to determine if we are dealing with absence seizures, tics, or something entirely different. Hang in there and let us know what happens. I will keep you in my prayers.

When people post that seizures are a side effect of vaccines, are you suggesting that is a passing thing or a lifelong sentence?

I talked to my dr when my dd started sticking her tongue out, rolling her eyes and smacking her lips. She looked a bit like a crazy person. The dr said that it could possibly be from strep. Some kids develop facial tics after strep. Another dr suggested a dystonic reaction to meds. We had her on benadryl at the time. We stopped all meds, we also tried to decrease her stress level. My ped ran blood tests and neurological tests. It turns out that my dd just thought it was kind of cool to make these funny faces, she was trying out new things. She totally freaked us all out, and I think she rather enjoyed our large reactions. We stopped reacting so much and did a couple of funny face contests as suggested by the ped, and my dd isn't doing this at all any more. My dd is almost 5.

It's a crap-shoot really. If it is vaccine damage, then it is likely caused by the heavy metals...mainly aluminum, which is just a neurotoxic as mercury. The heavy metals wont come out of the brain until you take them out through chelation. But only time will tell. If you vaccinate again and the problems gets more frequent or develops into something more severe, I think you'll have your answer. I'm not the type to wait and see though...so I did my research early on and did an agitated heavy metal test on all of my children only to find that there was a hell of a lot more than just aluminum and mercury plaguing my children's brains. My pediatrician was astounded with the amounts of differing toxic heavy metals present in my children, and for no reason. There has been no "exposure" to these toxins...unless it's coming from the food chain, the environment, and the most likely culprit, vaccines.

I'm sure half a dozen people will flame me for this post, but I don't really give a hoot. You can either be in denial here or get real about what is being injected into your child.

What does a heavy metal test entail, PP?

Might be better to ask your pediatrician about it. It's non-invasive....involves a urine sample.

My daughter had this from 10 months to 20 months. It was very scary and would last 30 seconds or so. Mostly when she was eating. I taped it and took the video to nuerologists. She had MRIs, 24 hour EEGs etc.
Make sure you do this to rule out tumors or serious health problems. After that...
Here is how you can tell if its seizures or a tic. During an episode ask your child something they would really care about..."do you want a cookie?", "do you want to go to the park?" Or do something silly like still your tongue out at them... if its a tic as soon as its over they will respond. That is how you know they have conscious thought during, but can not answer due to an uncontrollable tic.
Once I told the doctor this he said its only a tic...he was proud of me for thinking to do this...I'm saying this part because no one cares for your child like you and YOU can't just trust doctors. Do your own research...see different doctors and push them. Also they wanted to strap my child down to do the EEG and the MRI when putting her to sleep I refused. I said let me talk to my child...she understands and deserves a chance. They were all skeptics but I proved them all wrong andy child did amazing...what would be scarier your mom saying they will put this mask on you while mommy holds you or being strapped down?
Sorry for the rant. My daughter is now 4 and has no tics.
Good luck to everyone! I know this is scary!

I have a 2 year old that started doing this last month. Like you I was concerned. I decided to google tonite because it has been a bad night with this. She blinks really hard for a long time and very frequently. It is very scary to watch.. I am lost also. I hope she too grows out of this......

Anonymous wrote:Get a test for strep. DS (almost 6) has had this happen several times. We were convinced he had Tourettes. Last go round, pediatrician tested for strep and he was positive even though the blinking was his only symptom. Apparently, some kids are predisposed to these types of tics and they tend to become pronounced by strep. We have also discussed the possibility of him having PANDAS which is a relatively new diagnosis that is still being researched, but we are monitoring to see if it happens again before pursuing that possibility. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PANDAS

PANDAS usually presents with very significant, even severe, behavioral changes along with the tics.
It sounds like most of the kids discussed here are otherwise their normal selves.

I agree with you!

My DD did this at the same age. She outgrew it by age 2.

Made it through the night and went ot Dr first thing Monday morning. They sent me straight to All Children's ER for a CT. Came back normal. Now waiting for nuerologist appt on Tuesday. She is doing is ALOT less now.

(Her eyes roll upwards for a slpit second, no other symtoms)

My 16 month old daughter is doing the same thing did you findout anything more?

my 24 month old started this at 22 months following 3 days of fever (that got as high as 104.3). he still does it at 24 months, mainly going into sleep or coming out of sleep. when he does it his eyes can become watery and he can become sensitive (want to flop on us or be carried around). he's had a language explosion during this time, knows 17 letters when presented randomly, seemed to learn a whole bunch of numbers overnight where the day prior he would call out "2" to all numbers but now can suddenly point to all sorts of numbers and pronounce them correctly, he is sociable and precocious. his mental abilities seem fine. he had a 2 day in hospital eeg and a 3 hour full body mri (in terms of actual time spent in the mri tube) a couple of weeks after the eye thing started. all that came back normal (along with normal blood tests). he also saw 2 opthalmologists dr vicente who said "dry eyes" and recommended humidifier and dr. avery who said falls in the spectrum somewhere between "babies do funky things" and a benign tic. we had several videos to show both of them. since all of these various medical appointments i've seen videos on youtube that look exactly like what my son does, except he has a mild case where he does it only a couple of times before/after sleep most typically. maybe once or twice a day at other random times, and he rolls his eyes just once or twice for a second, so it doesn't go on and on. docs we've spoken with expect it will go away over time. that's what we're hoping for... certainly has me on edge about future fevers and how that might go. since the illness at 22 months, he has had 1 random instance of vomit, and another where he vomited 9 times in 3 hours and then recovered (no fever with either). for the first 30 days of all of this he was much more agitated and intense than normal, through the day. now his personality is evening out and he's coming out of naps less sensitive. it used to be that i would have to hold him for up to 30 minutes, standing up. if i tried to even sit down holding him he'd say "up up up" and cry to have me not holding him standing up. but now post nap we can hold him standing or sitting, just for a few minutes, give him some fresh squeezed oj to the brain, entice him with a few hot wheels, and he's good to go after a few minutes.

My 13 month DS has done this on and off since around 9 months. Mostly does this while sitting in his high chair and rocking back and forth. Eyes roll around in his head. I got a referral for a neurologist but he stopped doing it as soon as I did. He then started doing this again a few days ago. I tend to think it's a tick because I can get him to 'snap out of it.' Any update from any of the previous posters? Or has this happened to anyone else's child?

My DD was doing something like this from about 18-22 months, and she just turned 2 a couple weeks ago and seems to have outgrown everything. She was staring into space a lot and blinking hard rapidly, so first our ped suggested going to an ophthalmologist to rule out any vision problems (did an eye exam and vision is fine), and then suggested seeing a pediatric neurologist to rule out absence seizures. The neuro did a full exam and said she passed his "tests" so we could either do an EEG to try to pick up seizure activity, or wait to see if symptoms get better or worse. While this isn't true of all seizure disorders, Absence/Petit Mal seizures aren't harmful and won't cause problems with development, so we decided to wait so we didn't have to subject to an EEG for nothing.

My best advice is to keep a close eye on your child's behavior and even keep a log so you can try to identify when it's happening, if something sets it off, etc. And like someone else said - while my DD was zoning out/blinking, she would still do things like chew, turn the pages of a book, or if we were able to engage her and ask if she wanted a cookie (which she loves) she would say yes while staring, which meant she wasn't having a seizure in that instance. But tapping her rarely got a reaction.
