Why no 8th Grade Graduation at Pyle

Anonymous
Maybe because you don'the graduate from 8th grade.

Should it be unusual to graduate from 8th grade?

8th grade isn't as big a deal in that part of the county as it is in say Wheaton where it might be the highest level attained for many of those students

Ah, the cheap bigotry reliably demonstrated by people on DCUM who probably haven't been in the parts of the county they're bigoted about in decades, except possibly to drive through.

8th grade "graduation" is a huge deal at my city school (not DC). Only about 75% of the kids will graduate from HS so they go over the top with it. I think it is also a cultural thing as the kindergarten "graduation" is just as big of a deal. The girls look like they are headed to their 1st Communion or their wedding. Many of them have make-up on and some have hair extensions. The first time I attended I thought that this is what pageants must be like (ala Jon Benet Ramsey).

There's no need to put "graduation" in quotes, you know. People certainly did used to graduate from 8th grade. It was the end of elementary school. Remember where Sarah in All-Of-A-Kind Family graduates from 8th grade and doesn't win the history prize?

It is the truth though

That's nice but it hasn't been a graduation in quite a while. Everyone must be college and career ready now.

It's not unusual to graduate from high school. It's not even unusual to graduate from college.

It is the truth though

It is absolutely not true to suggest that "many" students in Wheaton do not even attend high school. The drop out rate may be higher than in more affluent parts of the county, but it is inaccurate to suggest that many students do not go beyond 8th grade.

+1. I mean....they just built a brand new Wheaton HS because they had outgrown the old building.

2 of my kids attended MCPS middle schools - years ago. Westland did not have a ceremony and Farquhar did.

From the Pyle PTA:

Our 8th graders are moving on to high school! In lieu of an actual ceremony, the students will walk to Whitman for a tour and a celebratory luncheon in the courtyard.

Westland has an 8th grade graduation. Tickets are given out and everything. Although, come to think of it, I have not heard anything this year. I don't have an 8th grader right now though, but there was definitely a big event that was held at BCC last year.

Cancelled because of the BCC construction.
