Sounds about right.
Fun to take both. The hspt score must make her very happy & the SSAT score isn't bad either.
Which schools?

SJC, Good Counsel, and Choate Rosemary Hall

No girls schools except boarding? Is she considering a Choate?

What did you think of SJC for a girl?

She shadowed at both GC and SJC. She loved both. She's really into sports and found SJC to be a really diverse and welcoming environment.
I have no doubt that she would thrive either place, but GC is a bit closer to home.

She didn't want to go to girls only. Choate is co-ed and is a bit of a long shot, given her SSAT score, but her dad is an alumnus and she really wants to go there.

St Johns can be good with the sports but we weren't impressed with the disparity between the girls and the boys programs.
I.e.: two teams going to a tournament, one boys one girls. Air conditioned coaches picked up boys, broken down school but with open windows and no potty picks up girls. We left.
I hope Good Counsel is better
That's one thing you get with a girls school - the funds go to the girls.

Not an unfair criticism of the SJC girls' sports program, and one they are fully cognizant of. Much of the next round of expansion (the one Plank gave $16m to) is upgrading facilities for the girls. Just as they targeted Prep/Gonzaga in the current expansion, they are targeting Visi with their next.

I was wondering what the 16 m gift would be applied to.
Why did the inequality happen in the first place though? What has changed now?

My guess is some of the inequity happened because SJC just went co-ed in the 90's (I believe), so much more time to invest in boys sports. They have however just built a new turf field that will be regulated for softball. I agree that a lot of the $16 million is likely to be invested in the girls sports programs.

son - SSAT 80, HSPT 97.....so no correlation for him between the 2 tests. Note: 70 or so (can't remember exact score on verbal section of SSAT brought down overall SSAT), didn't study (perhaps studying would have improved vocabulary score), maybe the way the tests are scored (I believe SSAT penalizes for incorrect answers and this may have affected his results)

Son - SSAT 89%, HSPT 98%

Applying to Georgetown Prep and Gonzaga

60% on Ssat
90% HSPT

We are assuming the Ssat was a bit of a bad day at the office.

DD: 84 SSAT (86 for girls); 98 HSPT
Applying to Georgetown Visitation and Potomac. Ruled out other "prestigious" schools (NCS, Sidwell, Maret, GDS, etc) because of athletics.

Not sure if the PP will ever see this, but did your DD get into Choate with those scores? I'm an alum and my DD is interested too.

Those are great scores. Congrats!

PP here. Thank you for the congrats. He's applying to Sidwell, STA, SJC and Georgetown Prep. I've been told those scores are good enough for Big 3 but coming from a public I am concerned that just because he CAN get in doesn't mean he should go to a pressure cooker. He wants to play at least 2 sports. Any advice? My spouse thinks we should just send him to Wilson.

It really depends on what you are looking to get out of the HS experience, PP. If his grades are as strong as his scores OP, and he's happy enough in DCPS, he'll have a far better shot at a prestigious college by being a top student at Wilson. There is something about excelling there that excites the Ivies & other top schools. Whereas if he goes to private, he won't be as differentiated from all the other top kids fighting it out for slots. Something to think about...

I understand what you are saying but...Is there any quantitative data to support your statement? Have many kids gone to Ivies from Wilson in the last 5 years? Any white kids? Maybe I should start a new thread in the public school forum.

I believe this is an urban myth that parents like to tell themselves and there is no quantitative data that supports it. I am a big supporter of Wilson but think these statements are just silly and smack of insecurity.

My daughter had a composite score of 65th percentile on the SSAT but a composite of 96th percentile on the HSPT. Because the SSATS penalizea for wrong answers, she left a few questions blank. Also, the first SSAT book we got her was terrible, with numerous typos, repeared questions with different answers and other problems, so we lost a full 4 weeks in prepping.

Did your daughter get in schools requiring ssat?

Wilson posts its college matriculation list on its website. SWW has a good number of kids going to elite schools too.

Both had a great ED season based on the buzz among the kids. And, yes, PP that includes white students and non athletes. Personally, I doubt colleges care as much where you went to high school and more about who you are and what you've done with what you've been given.
