Hemnes series from Ikea - how's the quality?

Anonymous
Crap. We have hemnes everywhere upstairs. The white finish is fine but the drawer bottoms fall out of the hemnes dressers when the drawers are full. So annoying. and the side screws have needed to be repaired a couple of times. My husband is an expert at repairing what we call our ikea crap. Pier one looks more solid than ikea and still affordable.

My daughter has a Hemnes dresser (almost six years old at this point) and it's worked totally fine. No problems with the drawers at all.

She has the Hemnes bed, too, in the twin size, and it's great, but recent online reviews suggest that the queen isn't so great--the footboard panel falls apart.

The large drawers on our Hemnes 6 drawer keep falling of the rails. The drawers are large and hold a lot, but I have to empty them out to fix the drawers and they're quite cumbersome to reinsert. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I don’t mind assembling IKEA furniture but the dresser really is a pain to put together. My drawers have been fine but they don’t glide open and soft close like a nice kitchen drawer. It’s in a kid room but if it were for my clothes I’d get something better constructed.

We have a Hemnes queen bed, the 8 drawer dresser, the tall narrow chest, and a 3 drawer dresser in the white stain. It was in my bedroom 8 years ago and has survived 4 moves, including cross country twice. It is now our guest room furniture and is still holding up well. No bed squeaks (we had the lonset base that has its own frame and not the cheap luroy base) and no bottoms of drawers falling out. There is a crossbar on the underside of each drawer that holds the bottoms in, so I don’t know why everyone else has this issue. Construction of the dressers was no worse than the Malm and that 3 drawer dresser is a tank. It’s more solid than the 8 drawer and it IS real wood.

I bought a Hemnes chest of drawers for my son and had IKEA assemble it.

It’s crap furniture. The drawers are cheaply made and fall apart if you put anything heavier than a few T-shirts in it. Look at consignment stores or antique stores for actual wooden furniture.

The IKEA stuff looks nice, but doesn’t hold up to actual use.

I think the people with the drawers falling apart did something wrong on assembly. There should be a metal crossbar holding the bottom in.

This.

We've had a Hemnes 8 drawer for my daughter for the last 6 years. We paid for assembly because I knew it would last longer and be better if it was put together perfectly, and not wonky with our skills.

We've had a few paint chips come off the top. But the drawers still work perfectly. Overall I'm very happy with it! And I may let her paint it crazy colors as she gets older .

Really? My Hemnes dressers are still going strong after 8 years.

I have twelve hemnes pieces, over 7 years now and they have been great.

Agreed that pps must not be putting the drawers together correctly.

I'm very happy with this line.

I bought my white stain Hemnes dresser from the as-is section as a floor model, fully assembled. Had it delivered up to my 2nd floor master. The delivery fee was about $60 and I tipped $20. Overall it was still cheaper than buying new.

My dresser is rock-solid even with my bottom 2 drawers holding my bedlinens (sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases).

I’m purchasing the tall 6 drawer and will be focused on assembling correctly. I wish I could find it also in the as-is section!

Some tips I got from watching IKEA assembly videos on YouTube include using wood glue with any dowels and to screw cams in just enough to assemble and then tightening at the final stage.

For those with the drawer issues - you can add supports using balsa wood.

Our hemnes white bed is getting some weird paint issues now that it’s 8-10 years old. Like it looks like the paint is wrinkling in parts? Wardrobe and dresser are holding up fine. It’s not a huge deal and it’s more than met my expectations for the price, but thought I’d mention it...

We have a Hemnes dresser in our guest room - gray stained. It was a beast to assemble but its very sturdy and looks great. It does not look like an Ikea piece - I don't think there are any exposed screws or allen bolts on it.

We have a Hemnes dresser and wardrobe. Both are ten years old now, and have gone through one move. Both work fine and have no issues other than regular wear and tear. They're both the black/brown color.

We've had the white 8 drawer for about 4 years and still looks and works great. We did get the glass top for the dresser and am glad we did - I could see it getting scratched over the years but the glass has protected it well and makes it look higher end.
