OP, we lost two attorneys a week before the shutdown. They both stated the prior furlough and the uncertainty of October 1 as the primary reason for their departures. Due to the hiring freeze, We were already down four attorneys before their departure. It's a mess and almost everybody is looking for an exit strategy. GL to you.

The prior furlough was definitely a significant factor in my decision to leave for the private sector. At least, it was what made me shift from casually interviewing at a few places to suddenly being very serious about making a transition.

I have a close friend who is arguably not great with his finances who left almost exclusively as a result of being furloughed. He was going to miss a mortgage payment and had a standing offer somewhere and decided to get out.

And you sound like a pretentious asshole.

Ok, I might sound like an asshole to you (not that I care). But what is "pretentious" about my comment? Do you even know the meaning of the word?
Hmmm, you insult OP and then you want explanations. How did you put it? Buh-bye.

LOL -- Hi OP!

Seriously, nice sock puppeting OP. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

There will be many people having second thoughts about staying with the government. It is no longer the safe haven it once was. Years ago, my grandparent retired from the post office after 43 years. He had a great pension. There is no longer this type of security in the government.

I say if you can find security anywhere, take it.

Since you can't, and public sector employees are not held to the same performance standards expected of employees in the private sector, there will be no shortage of people ready to take your place. Of all the arguments in favor of breaking the current logjam, the argument that people won't be willing to work for the federal government if something isn't done soon is one of the weakest.

PP here. I do not work for the government so not sure why you are referring there is someone to take my place. Not every poster here works for the government. People can and should work where they are able to find security and have their needs met. I don't see where this would be grounds for an argument.

OP here. Thank you, and I will admit that once I made the decision this morning, it was a relief. It was probably imminent even if the government hadn't closed but the timing of the offer was perfect. It's a great opportunity and a chance to do things I couldn't do in government.

How did you submit your resignation and did you give a two week notice?

We are not allowed to hire? Sorry! However, we are under the DoD umbrella and was hit hard with the first furlough, and will be again under a CR of the sequestration appropriations.

Congratulations OP! I don't get the vitriol in this thread.

I think the OP made a totally reasonable point, but with prose that made him or her seem like a pompous jerk.

Quick google search of this Jack Burkman character that was interviewed in the OP on myfoxdc. Seems like a standup guy: propositions random women to have sex with him for 1000 bucks (got exposed on myspace, years back, lol) Was on the DC Madam phone list. Great standup guy, that has room to bash people!
