If you bought a fancy night guard from your dentist...

I bought one on Amazon for about $60. The custom made ones from the dentist would have cost $300. The dentist even recommended that I try the over the counter variety first. The OTC ones are somewhat custom in that you have to initially mold them to your teeth by immersing them in boiling water and then placing it in your mouth. It's not as painful as it sounds.

I'm surprised by the answers in this thread. Using invisalign? I seriously doubt this will protect your teeth. It's way too slim. And custom made night guards do NOT have to cost $300 or even $500. You can now easily order directly from the dental lab yourself and save. This page explains it better than I can: http://www.cureyourbruxism.com/step-1-protect-teeth-night-guard/

LMFAO- I just put mine in. I've had it for at least 13 years. $350 I think back then from the orthodontist. Fyi, not only does grinding cause headaches and tooth cracking, it also causes teeth to move, ruining orthodontia---that is why the custom ones fit so tightly. Mine was more comfortable after about a month.

I bought a fancy one from the dentist years ago but, like a previous PP, it didn't fit after my teeth shifted over time and I stopped wearing it. I never found it very comfortable so maybe my teeth would not have shifted if I had worn it more consistently.

I finally stopped grinding my teeth at night...but it took me quitting my job and finally getting 8 hours of sleep each night. Once I was less stressed and better rested, I didn't have a problem with grinding. Interesting enough, after having my second baby 6 months ago I started grinding again and I think it was a product of getting less sleep and only sleeping in short intervals. Now that she's sleeping through the night and I'm back to 8 hours of sleep, the grinding has subsided. That's probably not much help to you, though.

I did, it lasted for years. I have now learned not to grind at night. The alternative was searing jaw pain and headaches during the day. 100% worth it.

How did this happen? I'd love to learn this--been grinding all my life.

I think mine was closer to this than $500. I have had it for at least 14 years, I did not wear it all the time at first and it felt tight. Now I wear it nightly and I feel uncomfortable sleeping without it. Glad to know I can have it replaced for less if I ever lose it.

PP's how can you have the same appliance for over 10 years? Doesn't it get nasty and collect bacteria? I brush mine every morning but they get worn out and cloudy/unclean looking so I get a new one made up every 2-3 years.

You've had the same teeth for more than 10 years! I soak mine in denture cleaner and have not had any issues.

I have ground three teeth and two crowns to dust. And ouch. So yes, I guess money well spent.
