Anyone fight, and win, a camera speeding ticket in DC?

Anonymous
DC has artificially low speed limits as a means to collect revenue. There is going to be an article coming out about this in Huffington post. No, we should not just bow down and pay the tickets every singe time. It's ridiculous that they would have 25/mph speed zones on 6 lane roads. They need to be in accordance with the needs of the neighborhood and what the public wants.

Also, 125 price has NOTHING to do with previous tickets. It's because of how fast she was going. That's it. I got a $125 ticket for going 39 in a 25 mile zone on Michigan Ave (6 lane road). I paid the ticket because I WAS speeding. Fine. However, I am fighting to get the speed limits raised to something other than a cash machine for the city.

PP already said she was "going 56 in a 45 MPH zone." What irritates me about speed camera tickets is that there is no police officer in the world who would pull you over and give you a ticked for going 56 in a 45 on an interstate. But there the camera is and it does. Aren't these supposed to be about safety, not revenue generation? Oh, wait...

Oh yes there are police that would pull you over for 11 miles over. My sister is a prosecutor and she can tell you they happily ticket you for 6+ over in many parts of Virginia, for example (with a 55 or a 65 mph limit). I don't think there are any interstates with 45 mph limits, though.

11 mph over the limit represents a significant safety risk -- it's a lot harder to control a car at 56 than at 45. So many people think 10 over is the norm, but just because some police officers/troopers won't pull you over for it, doesn't make it ok to do.

this is absolutely false (re safety risk).... the uniform manual for establishing traffic codes requires that speed limits be based on the 85th percentile speed (speed at which 85% of cars travel) and nearly every road, and every interstate, is engineered for speeds well in excess of the posted speed limit.

in many places the required traffic studies are not done and speed limits are set without regard to the UMTC requirements, which means both that they are legally unenforceable (if you can show that) and also not set with regard to the actual safe speed to drive.

you would be better informed if you opined based on the law & the facts, not just a silly knee-jerk thought like "11 mph over the limit is dangerous." that's often a load of b.s.

Well, this part of the public is pleased that the speed limits are low, and has no problem using fines to generate revenue.

I'm curious - are you similarly up in arms about the speed of Conn. Ave. just north of the Chevy Chase Circle?

Why? Because you like congestion in the city? They have imposed artificially low speed limits on most of the major arteries in the city. The speed limits have nothing to do with safety. They are a pure money grab and I am NEVER in favor of any branch of the government doing that. Are you in favor of driving 35 on the interstate too? WTH Learn how to drive safely and you don't have a problem.

I live in the city and already pay taxes. That should suffice. There are people coming into this city every morning, contributing to the ecomony of it, that don't need this stupid DC shit.

This is the best idea ever! Ticket the speeders, but enter the people who drive the speed limit into a lottery were they can win money!

They certianly will pull you over and give you a ticket for going 11 miles over the speed limit. In VA if you are 20 miles over speed limit, you can be hauled off to jail.

Another fan of the low speed limits of DC. I live in the City (and not CCDC which I don't count). I have people from Maryland come zooming by on my road (25 mph limit) at 45 mph every day. Slow the FUCK down. Also, is there some reason that people don't stop at stop signs anymore?

Do you live on a quit residential street or Michigan Ave, South Dakota Ave, Conn. Ave? Those are the ones I'm talking about. Not 13th Place NE. Of course those should be low. However, I don't see any kids playing on 6 lane roads during rush hour. Get real!

You seem oddly outraged about this. And weirdly invested. Why not just drive a little slower? In the city, if you stick at 9 mph over the limit, you won't get a ticket.

And the sympathy for those poor souls that drive into the city, who don't need this "stupid DC shit?" Cry me a river. It's an urban area, and I'm all for traffic calming measures, "artificially low" or otherwise.

Sorry, if you want to fight for something, fight to have the road narrowed.

Just want to point out that this is total horseshit. Not sure what that says about the rest of your point.

"The speed limit is commonly set at or below the '85th percentile speed' (which is the speed at which 85% of the traffic is travelling) and in the USA is typically set 8 to 12 mph (13 to 19 km/h) below that speed."

In any case, this is a rule-of-thumb for highway engineers--not applicable to surface roads in an urban environment. That's not to say that this isn't widely believed by folks who think they have a God-given right to drive as fast as they want through our communities.

Of course not! That's a danger to children and other living things. People who speed north of the District line are animals who deserve the death penalty!
