Latin as only language?

Anonymous
Some things to consider from a classics major:

-The study of Latin is a MAJOR plus on college admissions applications.

-The study of Latin should make the study of any romance language seem like falling off a log.

-The study of Latin improves your English grammar better than any English course you will take in MS or HS.

-Latin has a stronger correlation to higher SAT Verbal scores than any other language for the past 30 years running.

-Latin (and classics generally) are the heart and soul of the liberal arts in the west; Latin's lack of use in modern communication is more than compensated for the abundance of allusions to in literatures of many languages. In short, it makes you a more well-read person. Which, in my view, is more useful than knowing how to ask where the bathroom is in Paris

-Colleges and employers know that studying the classics = critical thinking and a deeper appreciation of both the grammatical and rhetorical workings of language.

-Lasltly, I just got a new job within the past month and the recruiter at the firm told me "your resume got picked out of the pile because we know people who study classics are sharo, critical thinkers"

9:19: What is "sharo"? Would I understand better if I'd had 4 years of Latin rather than 3?

I don't think the question is "is Latin useful" and a plus on applications and in life. Obviously the answer is yes. But Latin as the only language? That is a different matter. If you're wondering about college applications, perhaps college counselors can speak given their experience seeing applicants - do the ones with only Latin get in to the schools they want to get into?
