I think he’s correct to have all these realizations. Watch Gary vaynerchuk - 47 is not old. Encourage him! But he should not quit till he gets a new job

I agree with this. There are a lot of different things he could do. I think he needs a plan with a backup plan and the realization that he may need to start low on the totem pole. I’ve hired probably 50 people over the last ten years (public sector), including people in their 50s. Don’t underestimate bringing maturity (hopefully combined with flexibility) to the table. He needs to exude quiet confidence, complete acceptance of his life choices with no defensiveness, an enthusiasm for the job he is applying for, an ability to problem solve, collaborate, and get along with a wide variety of people, including senior management. He could pull all that from his adjunct experience if he reflects upon it and prepares for interviews.
