If you google the actual historical figures, it makes sense.

I like this show, but so many liberties were taken with the characters.

I just watched the first episode and came here to see if there was a thread about it.
LOVE IT.
Franz and Lis and have good chemistry, I love the clothing, I love the mean mommy and the little brother who looks like Cynthia Nixon. This is going to be fun!

Just finished all 6 episodes.
I liked it, I wanted to see “the end.” Feels like it cut off. But, I’ll go pick up the history books..

I do know the fate of each person, in the real end, but not what happened at the moment the series ended.

For the emperor’s mother, that one scene… I think the woman was the 2nd lady in waiting, the one she promotes later.
I couldn’t tell who the man was. It bothered me, but lol I don’t plan to go back and investigate.

One other comment, it’s interesting seeing how her personality caused Franz to pick her, could have been a lot of good.. but sometimes naturally turned things against her.. People like that, I can see how they do need to play by the rules a lot more often. Rarer stepping out of line would be a breath of fresh air; but they don’t know how to stop pushing back ALL the time. I’m thinking of people who are like this, and people who do well to manage themselves, hold back a little bit until the right moment.

I don’t know but it’s well established that Sophie provided her sons with “hygienic” noble ladies from the court…because you can’t marry them off to 16yos and expect them to have their sexual needs met.

OK, had to chime in there. It was the norm for centuries for an older noblewoman (or someone equally trusted, with no history of sexual illness) to see to princes' sexual education. The wedding night had to go off without a hitch, and the bride was expected to be pure and ignorant of such matters. Therefore, the prince had know all the necessary things.

It was not prurient or perverted. Just a necessary thing to do in the social framework of the times.

I’m in the middle of watching this now and I like it enough. It’s maybe a bit slow.

Helene would obviously have been a better match. Much more compliant and obedient.

Does any of this series take place in Corfu? She spent many years in Greece and I’m curious if this is covered in the show.

I was obsessed with it and asked my parents to take me to the Schönbrunn Castle (they did, we lived in Europe).
Watching that old show now it looks so weird 😂

I loved it! I think it’s still on German public TV every year around Christmas.

Yes! A Hungarian friend told me this - everyone watches the trilogy at Christmas in Hungary and Austria too.

Midway through the series, and I’m enjoying it.

It was very popular on Netflix and was renewed for a second season.

Some critics say it’s better than Bridgerton—even though it’s more serious like Victoria than silly Bridgerton.

The Empress and Victoria were excellent historical dramas. Bridgerton was a trashy soft-porn waste of time.

Totally agree, on all counts.

It’s one of her lady’s maids, Margarete. While Sophie was having a bath, she told her she still needs her, and that she was looking forward to the girls performance later on.
