Microwave - plate gets hot, not the food

don't know about Pottery barn, but all the plates and bowls i have from crate and barrel are the same way! I assumed their stuff is just not microwavable. My dinnerware consists of a hodgepodge of different p;ates and bowls from all different places. I only have this issue with C&B.

My microwave was working 100% , heating food and not the plate, irrespective of the plate type.

Recently it's the other way around. It must have something to do with the micro-wave, I will reply once I've recieved it back from LG.

It's definitely NOT the plate type.

i totally agree with you. same problem with me and everything below grill doesnt heat up at all. but grill up to combo 3 superheats the plate while the food is as cold as an ice cream please i need your reply once you resolve yours

Any object that contains water will get extremely hot in a microwave oven. Ceramic materials in particular absorb a lot of moisture in the air. The microwaves cause water molecules to rapidly flip back and forth ( due to their polarity). This friction causes heat to move through the object. Us a paper plate for heating, then transfer the food to another plate.

HA. And that explains why I have not been able to find the perfect cup to heat my tea that I like to sip (hot) all day long.

Here too!! Same plate and bowls being used as before. Now they are heating up but not the food???

Very informative thread! Plastic in the microwave is not a good idea. Off gasing. Paper plates do a better job. Also microwave pulses are short, so they do not do a good job on larger things. Note that most microwavable dinners are not cubes, but have a skinny side to them. Just try microwaving some thing that is cube shaped! Like soup in a square/cube shaped container.

This is our exact situation! PB plates. I think that maybe the glaze on these ceramic plates is not microwave safe. (They are ceramic, made in Italy, and chip like crazy, btw--never buying plates from PB again!) I jut avoid using these plates in the micro (also a GE space saver).

Clay and melamine do this for me. Use china or glass. It's not safe.

This happens all the time with certain types of plates/bowls. They can be glass, plastic, wood, dung, whatever you like. Some do not conduct in the microwave. A PP said it pretty clear, but here is a link with PICTURES to make it easier for you.

It is amazing how there are so many highly educated people on here yet something so simple totally trips you up!! LOL!

I agree. My microwave was heating the food not the plate. Now it is heating the same plates so hot they get black cracks and the food is cool

Fyi, melamine should NEVER go in the microwave. The resin contains formaldehyde which can leach in the microwave.

Water molecules are polarized. Thus they vibrate when subjected to microwaves. The friction from the vibation causes the heat. If the plate heats up it probably has water molecules in it as part of its structure. Since the plate starts out warmer than the food it would tend to get hot while the food would be going through a phase change (ice to water) which takes more energy than simply raising the temperature.
If this isn't correct then it must be something else that is the problem.

My new microwave is doing this. Its not the plates, theyve always been fine in my old microwave, but with this new one it just heats the plate and not the food
