Same. |
There is a resurgence in wood cabinets but kind of still in that simple, rustic/industrial aesthetic that’s been going the last 10 years or so. Cherry cabinets that look super sleek and dark and circa 2002 are not back in style as far as I’m aware. But whatever, it’s your kitchen, do whatever you like. I like wood more than white, but others may disagree. |
I have maple-ish in ours. Pretty but definitely give an older air. I've decided instead of painting or replacing to change to white countertops and change the hardware. I think it'll go with the overall look of the house, but be more timeless. |
That's the thing. It's not so much the wood that makes them look dated, it's the style. Shiny, dark stained cherry cabinets with raised panel doors are dated. Natural cherry with simple doors can look quite up to date. |
Planning the same. Mine are an espresso wood color shaker, but the stainless bar handles taking off and replacing counter with white quartz and backsplash white subway tile. A few other updated touches (lights, sink) I don’t trust painted cabinets with our heavy use kitchen. I think will be just fine, and still quite $$$ for us anyways. |
They will still be superior but they will look updated. Make sure you find someone who is good at painting them though. I get the admiration for real wood but it’s not timeless and buyers do care. |
Why paint them now, before listing? The buyer can always paint them. Heck, you can offer a credit for painting them in the closing if it's that big of a deal. But to paint what this poster describes as [/i]beautful[/i] now is so weird. Plenty of people may like the look. |
I would change the countertop and handles before painting. Painted cabinets will chip, no matter how good the paint job. |
I bought last year. My realtor kept commenting on the outdated kitchen. Personally I loved it, and would not have bought the house if the cabinets had been painted. The hardware is a little 2010ish but I can change that.
Team no painting on cabinets! Unless they are plywood, wood always looks better to me. |
If they have an ornate design no amount of paint is going to hide their datedness. If they are simple with clean lines then you should absolutely not paint them. Make sure you use a very plain countertop, maybe plain white. |
I'll bring the popcorn. |
White is classic and never goes out of style. |
Cherry cabinets can look very nice with soapstone. I’m not a fan of them with speckled granite or even light quartz/marble. |
If you scroll down a bit in this link, you can see the cherry cabinets in the 'before' of this kitchen, and the white cabinets in the 'after' (they painted the cabinets and added a smaller set above to take cabinets to the ceiling). The white kitchen definitely looks new/fresh/updated, even if it's not your style. The cherry did not look bad but also does not look current.
Link: https://www.stonegableblog.com/a-white-transitional-kitchen-tour/ I think ultimately the question is whether you love the cherry. If so, then keep them, and just accept that when you sell the house in the future you won't get a bump up in perceived value that buyers give 'updated' houses (b/c that combination and style you've described is a past trend that has not come back). |
"White is new looking for a few months then gets real dirty and chips and you will especially dislike your soul-less kitchen." |
