18 month old vomiting randomly

Anonymous
About 3-4 times in the past month DD has gone to bed no problem, and then woken up 20-30 minutes later and vomited. I can't figure out if it is really just random or if there is something wrong that I am missing. Nothing seems different on the days when this happens from any other day. Any thoughts?

Is he going to bed happy or upset? I've heard stories of kids crying until they vomit, is this the case? Is he in a deep sleep then wakes up and vomits? If that is the case, I'd call the pediatrician to discuss.

best of luck

I have had a few occasions of vomiting in my 18 month old recently and I'm quite sure it's just because of the cold he has - he is stuffy and not draining it properly (i.e. unable to blow his nose), resulting in not being able to keep food down sometimes. He doesn't have a temperature at the time or anything. But does seem to be uncomfortable, crying a bit more than usual. Think I may be in for it again tonight - he hasn't gone down well. This cold is quite a bad one - all the kids at his big sister's school have it.

OP here, thanks for the replies. To answer, she goes to sleep without a peep, and no colds to speak of. Maybe it's time to call the doc?

If it happens very soon after going down to sleep, I suspect it may be reflux.

Definitely call the dr to have it looked at.

That's not typical. Probably isn't anything serious, but if it's reflux- it could cause scarring in a worst case scenario, etc. You don't want to leave a little problem to become a big one!

My 3 yo has what I would call a sensitive stomach, and it started at around 18 mos. He gets carsick occasionally, has woken up in the middle of sleep and thrown up a couple of times, and has thrown up after breakfast a couple of times. Never as frequently as you're reporting, but I'd say we have an "incident" about once a month. My husband also is prone to carsickness, so I assume our son just got dad's stomach; in addition, he generally is completely fine within 15 minutes of vomiting (he gets hysterical in the moment, then calms down and is happy as a clam), so it seems clear he's not sick. We've tried to figure out what triggers it, but there's nothing consistent; I think sometimes things just don't settle in his stomach properly. Anyway, I don't think it can hurt to call the doctor, but I'm guessing everything's fine.

It could be a sign of epilipsy!!

Please check it out (google it see if there are other matching symptoms) and call the doc.

I'm serious, but I don't want to freak you out. It is true that a child can go to bed, feel fine, vomit during the night, wake up and feel fine (not even remembering vomiting), have no fever, cold symptoms, stomach aches, etc.

OP - what did the doc. say???

My daughter always did that when she had an ear infection. NO other symptoms...I guess the fluid would make her feel dizzy. Also, for what it is worth, my father and father in law, who are both physicians, advise AGAINST looking up symptoms on the internet They think if you are concerned it is better to call the office...otherwise you will give yourself a case of FREAKOUTEDNESS Good Luck.
