Pete Cahall is out as Principal of Wilson

If anything, the prospect of a gay mayor prompted his decision to come out. Or something that occurred during the school day/year.

Why must some make this about his sexuality? Chances are, it was no big secret to begin with.

I don't think it's about his sexuality, but Cahall made it a public issue when he came out and waved a flag on Gay pride day (which I support). Before that, DCPS likely did know and didn't care - about his sexuality or anyone else's.

Some say that DC is winding up with a gay mayor in any event.

Cahall's being "out" is not the reason he will be out. But all of his public posturing about his sexuality in the past year may have caused him to lose focus on his "day job" and become a distraction. The way he has handled his contract non-renewal has caused many who liked him and his earlier work at Wilson to question his judgment and his continued effectiveness in a DCPS leadership position.

And it's had the same effect on some who questioned his judgement and temperament from the start.

He's been principal for what? 6 years?

Then I don't think it's fair that his judgment be called into question after SIX YEARS because of ONE incident: his response to what he considers an unwarranted firing.

I'm not even a fan and think it's his karma, but let's be fair. Trying to do a smear campaign is not a good idea.

His judgment has been called into question from the start -- and again now. This is not to detract from the good things he's done for Wilson - it's all part of the package.

He spoke at an open house and he just is not impressive as an educator or in general.

Can you say specifically what he has done wrong?

I would like to know too. He seemed very polished to me.

Here's a comment on Mathew's Post story. It's an interesting bit of info for those who consider this karma.

Jay, There are two errors of fact.
1) Mr. Cahall was appointed June 23, 2008, one year after Rhee was hired (6/13/2007).
2) You wrote, "I have criticized Cahall for transferring an aggravating but productive history teacher out of Wilson." I was that teacher you referred to, however, it was not Mr. Cahall, but Chief of Schools John Davis, acting on the authority of Chancellor Rhee, who transferred me. Nor did he transfer our award-winning Anatomy-Physiology and AP Biology teacher. That was done by Rhee through an official she assigned to Wilson prior to Mr. Cahall's appointment.
The principal may not transfer a teacher without approval of the instructional supt. When John Davis informed me two days before the end of the school year that he intended to transfer me, Mr. Cahall was not in the building."

Yes, this probably deserves a new thread. So, I'll lock this one and start a new one.
