The 1:1 technology budget suggestion is dumb because the instructional technology budget is about a third of the acquisition cost of that parcel.

The PTA suggestion is dumb because Virginia PTAs aren't allowed to make capital contributions to schools.

I'm not the PP who suggested those specific cuts, but don't tell me there aren't cuts that can be made. If we need land, and we do, then we have to figure out a way to pay for it, and now, because barring some awful disaster that makes all of Arlington a hellacape that people avoid, we aren't going to get it cheaper down the line, and we're going to have to max out every site we already have with multiple schools. They absolutely must begin identifying and acquiring parcels now. They found the money to do it at Glebe, they can find it here. That or we just sell the entire Kenmore parcel because it's so useless. Then we can use that money to eminent domain and bulldoze houses in a more ideal location, right?

Sell the parcel because it's useless? Have you ever actually been there? In addition to two schools, it had a whole mess off sports fields. Pretty much the entire parcel is actively used.

I was being facetious. I know it's well used, and that's why we need more of it. The MS alone is projected to be at 110% capacity within the next 5 years.

That house is on the opposite side of the site from Kenmore so it wouldn't facilitate an expansion.

Are you really that dense or just being a jerk?
It can facilitate greater use of the site.
It could be additional field space.
It could be an outdoor learning center.
It could be playground space for another new elementary school.
It could be a preschool building.
It could start out as one thing and become other things as needs are identified over time.
I don't believe the poster was suggesting that building on this particular parcel would be an expansion of the actual Kenmore building. But gaining ANY additional access points to the CS/Kenmore property overall can address the ONE objection everyone seems to have to building more on the site and putting more students there: traffic.
Or, don't bother doing any of those things and just deal with expansion on the site as it is. Either way, fine with me.
You get this one. You make adjustments to Carlin Springs Rd. You do whatever people think has to be done in conjunction with Fairfax in order to improve access. All of it. But you DON"T wait until all the stars are perfectly aligned before doing ANY of it.

It doesn't give an additional access point. The Kenmore/Carlin Springs site already abuts 4th Street, which is the only road that parcel touches. As for the rest of it, please go look at the full site map and tell me how that parcel is going to provide playground space for a new elementary school when it runs right along Carlin Springs. Do you really think APS is going to put two elementary schools within 20 feet of each other?

Well, Kenmore was the first "preferred site" for the new elementary school now being built TJ, it's "preferred site" for the elementary school when Glencarlyn shut down Kenmore option. So, there's that to suggest they would.
And, if one is an option school and one a neighborhood school, why wouldn't they?

They need at least enough separation between two elementary schools that both schools could have kids outside for recess without having kids getting mixed together and ending up in different buildings. If they were to put a second elementary school on the site, it would not be anywhere near this lot you all are ranting about, it would be on the other side of the APS site.

This is why I can’t take all of you “buy the house!” people seriously. You have yet to put forward a feasible/productive use for the lot that in any way justifies the cost of it, which tends to suggest maybe it wouldn’t add anything to the site and APS is right not to buy it.

Are you just stupid? Do Discovery kids just wander into Williamsburg? Or maybe Discovery kids are just smarter than kids on the other side of 50. It is just fine to put 2 schools next to each other. Why do idiots like you get to vote?

Have you ever been to Discovery? Have you noticed that the elementary playgrounds are completely fenced in to keep them separate from the middle school? Are you aware that one of the reasons why APS's position has been that Discovery couldn't use the trailers currently sited for Williamsburg is because of the potential for mixing between the school populations?

So put a fence between the two elementary schools and their respective playgrounds. I can't keep trying to take you seriously and suggest nobody else does either. You're just being antagonistic and provocative. Even for that, your arguments are just juvenile and evidence of no credibility. Thanks for playing.
