PSA: How to report "car tax" evasion (ie, theft from the rest of us who pay our property taxes)

This. Is. No. Different.

Yes, there are people with actual exemptions. Leave those in charge to sort it out.

But there are a lot of people who justify stealing from the rest of us.

Agree with this. Tax evasion is very anti-social. It hurts all of us. Also the more people report otz the less normalized it will become. By reporting you can prevent people from ever trying it because it won't be worth the effort. That's the goal.

You guys are such losers. But you’re also quite stupid if you think your ad hoc neighborhood watch reporting network of uninformed dipdwads calling the county clerk’s office is going to have an impact on … what, exactly? Tax avoidance? Theft generally?

You’re just sad, bored, busybodies. Regular people think you are weird and avoid you. And I’m sure it’s not limited to this particular issue.

I live in Maryland, but the only people who I know live in Maryland with out-of-state plates are military.

Maryland doesn't have a yearly inspection requirement or a personal property tax so there's no incentive to avoid registering in MD. There are a lot of people who live in Northern Virginia with MD tagged cars, it's definitely a thing.

Thanks, OP. My neighbors are not military, they moved from out of state last summer and still have out of state plates. They've even joked about how long they can go without transferring it over. I reported it.

So what else do you steal?

From the self checkout at the grocery store? Stuff from people's porches and yards? Do you walk out of dressing rooms not paying for the things you tried on? You sound like a real winner.

Anonymous wrote:I report people who park in our neighborhood in DC. It’s super easy to do on the DC311 app. We have zoned 2hr parking and lots of them are rich Georgetown students with out-of-state plates.

There’s nothing more satisfying than waking up, leaving the house, and seeing tickets plastered on a line of cars outside my house. The DC ticket ladies come out at 4am and just start nailing everyone with an OOS plate.

Love it when stupid people pay my taxes for me.

Do you report people with accents to ICE too?

Seethe. Harder.

One day someone will not give YOU the benefit of the doubt.

Please remember in that moment, that you did not give the benefit of the doubt to anyone else either.

Do not come on DCUM to whine.

Out of state registered cars are often driven by illegal immigrants trying to skirt registration issues because they have no valid ID and no permanent address. They try to avoid identification from the state.

In Virginia, it's mostly military keeping a more advantageous state residency. They are allowed to do that

This is helpful but now that they dont do stickers on the cars here in Va how are we supposed to know?

Shut it, tax cheat.

It's just one person fixated on tax fraud who is replying to all the other posts.

They're very aggressive and probably not in their right mind.

Why does someone need to be given the benefit of the doubt? That's what the courts are for. If you're in the right, all will be sorted out just fine.

I don't need anyone to give *me* the benefit of the doubt, because I have all my ducks in a row. I'm not a thief or cheat.

You're a dick though, so be proud of that.

I hope you stub your toe.

It really would never cross my mind to report someone for this, and I have occasionally deliberately failed to claim deductions I was entitled to on my taxes (mostly to see if the tax authorities would notice, but the net effect was still I paid more tax than I owed). Car registration tax probably isn't even remotely the most significant tax people evade; maybe focus on helping the IRS go after big corporate cheats or rich people instead?
