Hush on skin tone. Got it. Red Line attack-take 3

Sorry - including the drivers

I hate to admit it, but I think you're right. When "law enforcement" refuses to enforce the law and protect the people, the people will do what they can to protect themselves. They have families at home to feed. Not everyone can afford to drive to work every day. Lots of people don't have a car, and have no other option but Metro.

People dont 'feel' unsafe on public transport. People are unsafe, the drivers on buses who are victims of constant abuse.

Good points.

Tbh, I'd be more afraid of the well-intentioned people who think they're going to shoot their way out of a bad situation on a metro car than a robber. You all really trust your fellow passengers to know how to carry and use a weapon safely? How do you protect yourself against someone who carries a loaded weapon in her purse and it goes off by accident? Carrying a gun myself won't protect me from stupid people who can't manage their own weapons competently.

If you use pepper spray you WILL be arrested for disrespecting the Laws of the District of Columbia.

That does not mean they don't have their information, investigating etc. What about swabbing their fingernails for DNA? We need an update from Lanier and Bwoser. #crickets #radiosilence #anothersacrificialvictimtothegodsofmetro

I'm sure that Bowser is planning to have a meeting and ensure that everyone has a seat at the table.

1. This is a terrible crime. It's scary, and it's a tragedy for the victim and his family.
2. It stinks that we haven't caught the perpetrators. Let's hope they are caught soon.
3. Because they haven't been caught, we don't know anything about them - where they live, what their home situation is, why the attack occurred...we know nothing. So let's try not to ascribe a whole bunch of things to people or groups that may end up not being true.
4. This is an isolated instance. It's newsworthy because it is extremely rare that people are attacked on the metro.
5. It is not an indication of DC being a "hellhole." It's not a reason for you to stop riding metro for safety - you are much more at risk from a drunk driver or from your own driving mistakes than from something happening on the metro.
6. Try not to live your live in fear.
7. The notion of collective punishment - that as a requirement for receiving government benefits we force recipients to take birth control, or that if a child commits a crime we punish his or her parents and extended family - is abhorrent and rascist and un-American.

Let's keep these thoughts in mind as we ponder these problems.

the best and most effective modern democratic president in history believed in it.

Well, he was wrong. He also put to death a retarded man to show he was tough on crime. He was wrong to do that too. I'm a Clinton fan, but his record is not 100% clean.

I don't think so, especially in self defense.
Please post link to your claim.

You can legally use pepper spray in DC if it's for self-defense. Link here: http://mpdc.dc.gov/page/mace-pepper-spray-and-self-defense-sprays

Who cares what a statute says. If you are under attack, you had best use any means necessary to avoid death or serious bodily harm. Better to be judged by twelve, than carried out by six.

I care. We all know how sue happy this city is. People should be able to reasonable, common sense defend themselves but the first line should be great policing. Todays paper said police are retiring left and right and we are below what's considered the ideal number of officers. So many shortfalls. Bowser? Lanier? Plan please.

Not much apparently. The priority is to protect the criminal, not the victim. They've been going in that direction for decades.
