You might have heard that our new superintendent Dr. Starr is holding a GT forum on March 22 at 7pm in Magruder High School.
In MCPS GT means all students who academically perform above the "on grade level" in Math and/or Reading. We need services for these students available in local school so that we do not depend on luck to send our child to magnet schools to get challenged. If services were available in our local school, we would rather have our child in the local school with neighborhood friends anyway. This is only possible, if we parents show up as a large group in forums like this, engage ourselves in conversation with the MCPS staff and expect better than what is available now! So, mark your calendar and be there. If you are planning to be there, please respond here and let the numbers show! I will be there with my DC. Number #2 |
I'm planning on going, too. |

Call me paranoid and skeptical, but could they have found a high school any further away from the DCC? It will be quite a challenge for working parents in Silver Spring to get to this meeting on time. |
I am totally with you. However, DCC parents have to think of this as a doctor's appointment for DC or somr important business meeting and go. It is very way in dates and we can arrange ahead of time. Remember it is in our interest to go there and show that we care. |
I will also be going. |
We should be looking for some concrete action items, rather than nice, political MCPS talk. Asking the return of homogeneous math grouping for elementary schools could be a start.
|
That's not going to happen. |
Okay, tell me you expect to accomplish from this meeting then. |
I meant, tell me what you expect to accomplish from the meeting.
|
Op here. If we have enough strength in the number and persistence to expect things to change, anything can happen. Where there are people, there is politics. When the resources are low, and requirements are plenty, the decision makers listen to people with voice. Please gather in the GT forum to have our voice heard. The forum is not where the decisions will be made... but it is where we demonstrate our resolution to make change happen! |
The forum is the place where we show Dr. Starr that we stand united in our resolve to revert the course "MCPS GT services" is taking. It is a meeting where we show "we care" about our kids education and we will not back down until our kids' need are met in the home schools. We pay for the public school system; we demand the service be provided. |
The definition of GT in MCPS is any kid who is above grade level in math and reading? I never knew that. |
Do any schools offer no reading or math above grade level? |
My understanding for curriculum 2.0 is "no above grade level acceleration in math". At least that's the way our school implements it.
