My 8th grader has a lot of grammar because there is a large SOL English test this year. Bring back more SOLs and you will see more accountability |
They used to have a 5th grade writing SOL with an essay. It should return |
+1. Since the new program is for K-6, what happens to the rising 7th grader next year? |
It’s is! The integrated reading and writing is being done this year but no scores count. |
My 5th and 8th grader have the new writing SOL. We'll see what it is (teachers have been unclear, they don't seem to know what it will be). |
Uh, no. |
Did you ever bother to get outside help for them or did you just throw your hands up? |
Yes, I did get them outside help. Shame on you, throwing the assumption that sending my kids to school and assuming they would be taught to read back in my face. Depending on what grade(s) your own children are in, I challenge you to ask them about their experience learning how to read. Moreso, I'd ask you to listen to the "Sold A Story" podcast. This issue is not just FCPS. It's really a shame what happened to these kids. |
PP is correct; the issue is bigger than FCPS. Nationwide, there is an entire generation of kids, nearly all of whom were not properly taught to read. Even some of the heavily engaged parents still have DC who still do not read well. |
Now that we're a month into the school year, I was wondering any insight from teachers on how the new curriculum is going. Is it true the curriculum is too be found too advanced for gen Ed district wide or just at my child's school? |
*Is it true the curriculum has been found too advanced for gen Ed district wide or just at my child's school? |
I am a teacher and it’s a LOT. Some grades seem more involved but based on the staff FB page, teachers are spending hours upon hours outside of school time to prep and lots of frustration. |
They would both say I taught them. And they would be right. |
I fear we might have a rough staff turnover year. People are not happy right now. |
It’s too advanced and it’s not because the students are reading below grade level. When you run the passages through any of the available levelers the results show the passages are 3-5 grade levels above. Now just imagine what that’s like in a school with ELs reading 2 years below grade level. |
