Top 100 Teacher Salaries for 2011: Phys. Ed Teacher Heads List with $203,154.

Anonymous
Apparently there is no tax money for the barren shelves at food pantries or the lack of beds at homeless shelters or to support the handicapped. But there IS enough tax money to pay for:

?A Phys. Ed teacher $203,154 for a 9 month work year.
? 14,866 teachers made more than $100,000 in 2011.
?21 who made more over $1,000/day ($170,000/yr.)
?A Drivers Ed teacher who salary is $18,222/month to teach teenagers how to parallel park.
?13 teachers make more than the Governor’s $177,500.
?Top 100 Teachers average $18,169 per month salary ($163,579/yr).
And all of that is for a 36-week work-year (182 day contracts).

Why the hell do I care what is happening in Illinois?

As an Illinois native, I'll speculate that the Phys. Ed teacher is also the football coach and has a case full of trophies. The local citizens would rather drop math and English than have him move to a rival school.

It appears someone on these boards is correct: American culture rewards sports over academics. This perversion begins in K-12 and extends to college and beyond.

Many of the districts shown on that page are places where no one below multi-millionaire income can afford to live, and those people want fabulous schools. Some of those schools (eg. New Trier) rival the best private schools around the country and put any school in this area to shame (yes, even TJ, because while the composition of the student body at TJ is stellar, face it, the facility is a pit).
Back when my DH attended New Trier, for instance, the school had not one but multiple orchestras for musicians at different levels. I attended an Ivy and had classmates who went to some of these schools, and they were just amazing students.

Many of those teachers have PhDs, because that's often the hurdle for getting a job at such schools. Also, I would be willing to bet that that list has administrative salaries (foodservice? who teaches food service?) mingled with those of the teachers.

Now whether the uber-wealthy districts are getting state taxpayers who do not have access to such fabulous schools to subsidize the outsized pension obligations they want to pay their teachers is another story...

In many areas, teachers are given additional pay for being a coach, driver's ed teacher, etc. My high school's fb coach also taught science (he had a biology degree from the University of North Carolina). He was a science teacher "during the day" and then did football "after hours." So, more income for more responsibility.

One PE teacher also doubled as a driver's ed. Driver's Ed wasn't his only responsibility - it was an additional responsibility with additional compensation.

Articles like this show how stupid the general public is.

The U of Maryland football coach gets paid much much more than the U of Maryland English Professor and Chair. The Public is not stupid. American culture puts much much more value on sports than academics. This coach does not do double University duties.

Your argument would have merit if the article were about college professor/employee salaries. It is clearly written to be about public school employees.

I echoed this sentiment on one of the Sandusky threads and was raked over the coals. I can't agree more, and I'm an educator at the secondary level.

Akin to the ongoing stupidity and preoccupation with sports at Sidwell. It appears the only "value" we get for $32,000/yr is a winning sports team!

What else is new? Scooby Doo could solve this mystery.

Good for them. I wish more teachers were paid what they're worth.

I noticed that since the economy tanked I am hearing less whining fro, teachers who consider themselves lucky to have jobs and get summers off.
To the pp who said that they are getting what they are worth, the teachers on that list are likely bad teachers who have figured out how to scam.

Does this make sense if this is true? College coaches make $$$$ because a winning team helps increase school visibility and attract incoming students who will contribute to the alumni fund. And alumni love to give more money to winning alma maters. Not to mention the lucrative tv broadcasting money. But this doesn't apply to public schools.
