s/o who gives pill treatment for toenail fungus?

Regular doctor or just podiatrist?

I went to the podiatrist already and he gave me some sort of snake oil that I spent ALL SUMMER using religiously and guess what? It had absolutely no effect at all. In fact, it looks worse and I didn't get to wear toenail polish all summer b/c of this stupid stuff.

So, now I want the oral meds that kill all the fungus in your body. Will a regular gen. practitioner give me those or do I have to go back to the podiatrist who wasted my time/money already?

Go to a different podiatrist. Mine offered it if I wanted it. But, my problems cleared right up with a daily soak in white vinegar and warm water. (Have you tried that?)

How long did you soak? How much of the water and how much vinegar?

FWIW, my DH saw a dermatologist about his toenail fungus and was told that the topical products very rarely work. He also said that the oral medication wasn't much more effective so, given all the risks (albeit maybe small), my DH decided not to try that either. Like the prior poster mentioned, the derm recommended a vinegar soak. I don't know the proportions or anything since my DH never tried that either and just decided to live with it. Good luck!

Wow...a pill to solve all your problems. You know what they say about things that seem "too good to be true" right?

My internist wouldn't give me the Lamisil pills because they don't always work, you have to take them for a long time (at least 6 weeks, but sometimes twice that) and can damage your liver. Toenail fungus is not serious and won't kill you, but the pills actually could. I just keep them covered in polish. Now I want to try the vinegar soak, though.

Wow, jumping to conclusions. She tried the topical solution. It didn't work.

I had severe nail fungus for years. Tried every remedy out there. My big toenails weren't just ungly - they would fall off anytime I bruised them - something as simple as stubbing a toe or dropping a can of soup. Running was then painful because I didn't have a toenail over the very tender nail bed.

I took the pills. They worked. It did not damage my liver. I am happy to say that I have not had a toenail fall off since 2005.

OP - I got it from my general practioner.

Thank you 9:13. I'd rather avoid the podiatrist b/c I just haven't had the best luck. I've heard that the pill version of Lamisil (?) really takes care of it.

Just do the laser treatment.

I think the laser treatment is over $1000.... I think the pill is probably $25 or less. So, no on the laser.

Sorry, I just saw this follow-up question. I usually do a big bowl of warm water (enough to cover my feet) and a cup to cup and 1/2 of vinegar. When I first did it, I did it for 30 days straight. Now, I usually only do it for a week or two after the symptoms show.

My husband did the pill for toenail fungus, and it was great. The general practitioner prescribed it, and he had to do blood draws to make sure that his liver was doing okay from it. It was the thing that finally cured it and was worth it!
