Much higher likelihood of early success

💯

Aim for ED1 (with top stats) at WashU/Emory/Rice/Chicago/CMU

Cornell /Vandy/Dartmouth only if truly exceptional

+1
Sound advice - don’t overshoot.

-know your high school's curriculum and all the different "tracks"

-do not push your kid to take course rigor that the teachers have advised against

-know your child: base your list on where they have a realistic chance of success if they get in: a kid who is around average at a top suburban public or a good private is around 80-85th %ile, or 1100 on a PSAT-10 , or around 1200 on a minimally-prepped SAT is going to struggle UVA or W&Mary, even if they get in.

Can someone turn this into a blog post or a book? I’d like to refer back to it.
