Is anyone happy with their school? ( starting k applications)

Every time I think we've picked a school I hear people bash it both on here and in real life. Do people just like to complain or are we all too picky?

Yes. And remember that bashers are often those rejected from the school they're bashing. Be sure to consider the source of opinions you hear.

Remember that it also depends on where you live and what you're looking for. We live in VA and for us the commute into DC would be pretty horrific given our jobs, so there are some schools that we didn't even consider (even though they're great schools) based on location. Parochial vs. private also plays a pretty major role (since there are good schools in both categories and some families don't have a strong preference and others do. Also the feel of the school and any personal experiences (good or bad). Some of us only post from direct experience which can be most helpful, and others post anecdotal or heresy info which can somstones also be useful. GL in your search!

The real question should be:

Is anyone's child happy with their teacher and classmates? Are they learning and excited to go to school every day?

As a private school teacher for years, I can tell you that there are some parents who will never be completely satisfied with anything and they can be very vocal with their dissatisfaction.

Do your research and find the schools that work best for your child and your family. And enjoy the learning process itself.

There are so many factors that go into a child's/family's experience at a particular school that it's impossible to find any one school that is universally loved by everyone.

Find the school that's right for YOUR family, and that's all that matters.

I find opinions based on heresy to be the worst.

I'd love to hear some posititves about local schools --- we are looking at both Parochial and Private in NW... loved GDS, but we may not qulify for enough financial aid. Anywhere else?

It is such a downer to read about how much people hate where where children are both public (FCPS) and private, maybe this thread can be a positive one!

We are a Virginia family that just started at St Pats. Love it! The commute is barely 15 minutes with traffic and couldn't be happier with the teachers and administration. It's still early in the year so who knows what I would say in May but so far..they couldn't be nicer at this school and I am feeling very satisfied. It is pricey though so you would save going to a parochial school but I think St. Pats has a good FA program..worth looking into. If you are looking at parochial schools in NW--Our Lady of Victory has a great reputation. Good luck!

I'd love to tell you how happy we are with our school but it is one frequently bashed here by 1-2 trolls so... to spare a great school some undeserved bashing, I'll refrain.

My child is extremely happy at WIS. Loves (almost all) the teachers and is fully bilingual.

We love Sheridan. We have ongoing dialogue that it may feel too small and cozy as DCs hit middle school, because the enrollment is ~240 or something. That's our only serious criticism of this school, specifically.

OK, save your dollars; it is a total waste of $$ to spend it on any grade up to 5th or 6th if you live in ward 1, 2, 3. There are also exceptions for some great Elemetary schools in other wards. You wanna be HAPPY? GO PUBLIC, and count your money. Then, like me, you have your choice or private school options, if you even find private necessary at this point, but I assure you if your kid is smart and you're involved they'll have their pick easily by 6th.

You want weeks dedicated to testing each year - GO PUBLIC. You want to have a second teacher/aide in the classroom paid for by you (the PTA)? GO PUBLIC. And so on. It's not so simple PP.

To 19.54.

Respectfully, Just because someone bashes your school, it does not mean they are a troll. They have a right to their opinion even if it differs than yours.

Agreed PP, people can disagree and all schools have their doubters/haters. But in this case the person clearly has an axe to grind and is clearly intent on bashing.
