McLean has to worry about making it past the district playoffs

It's literally impossible not to make it past the district playoffs if you are even, simply, an average team.

McLean will only need to beat Wakefield to make it to regionals. They already beat Wakefield 20 to 3.

Realistically McLeans season ends in the regional semis. I predict a Yorktown/langley regional championship

Wow. Someone (Liberty District runner-up) is beating Madison at home in a regional-semi?

Wouldn’t be crazy. Yorktown was up on Madison the whole game until a last min goal and then they lost in OT their first time playing each other

don't forget, supporters of the Liberty district teams (McLean, Yorktown and Langley) are rarely accused of making predictions that are too conservative.

Yeah, I would not want to have to play Madison at Madison to make it to States. Honestly might be better getting Liberty third place over Liberty second place.

Ranking Guy’s Week 8 -2024 VA Boys Class 6 Rankings

1. Robinson (13-0)

Results: Def. Lake Braddock 16-1, Def. Cosby 17-8
Analysis: Robinson bounced back from a poor showing against Stone Bridge, crushing Lake Braddock and handing Cosby their worst loss of the season. With only West Springfield left, the Rams will earn their second undefeated regular season in the three years. Robinson has a lock in the #1 seed in the Patriot district tournament and should cruise to the Region C #1 seed. It’s been eight years since Robinson’s last state title. Can the old guard wrestle the belt away from Madison this year?

Quality Wins: Madison, Yorktown, McLean, Langley
Decent Wins: West Potomac, South County, Woodson, Lake Braddock, Cosby
Quality Losses: None

This Week: 5/2 @ West Springfield

2. Freedom South Riding (12-0)

Results: Def. Gainesville 13-3, Def. Oakton 13-3

Analysis: Freedom keeps rolling, downing Gainesville and Oakton with ease. The earlier Patriot win was elevated to a Quality Win after Patriot took down Battlefield. Likely the Eagles’ best start ever, they roll into their game with Battlefield undefeated and with their rival struggling without their D1 goalie. Without him, look for Freedom to take this one by 2-3 goals. If he makes a return, this could be one of the best games of the season.

Quality Wins: Riverside, Briar Woods, Patriot
Decent Wins: Dominion
Quality Losses: None

This Week: 4/29 @ Battlefield, 5/1 vs. Osbourn

3. Madison (8-5)

Results: Def. Oakton 16-2, Def. Patriot 15-3

Analysis: Madison is playing its best lacrosse of the season and throttled Oakton, then did the same to Patriot, taking the shine off of Patriot’s recent win over Battlefield. Their LSM is back and the offense is firing on all cylinders. Solomon wants his fourth title to pass Curran and tie Brewer, staking his claim to one of the best coaches in the modern era. Langley and Madison have similar resumes but Madison appears to be the stronger team at this point in the season.

Quality Wins: Yorktown, Patriot
Decent Wins: West Potomac, Chantilly, Woodson, Oakton
Quality Losses: Riverside, Severna Park, Atlee

This Week: 5/1 @ South Lakes

4. Langley (10-3)

Results: Def. Sidwell Friends 15-12, Def. South Lakes 15-3

Analysis: Langley jumped out to a huge lead against Sidwell, then took their foot off the gas and let the Quakers crawl back in before finally putting them away. The Saxons then handed South Lakes a worse than expected loss. Langley has locked up the Liberty district #1 seed and will likely play the winner of the Yorktown/McLean rematch in the championship game as they try to get their first district championship in a decade.

Quality Wins: Yorktown, McLean, Sidwell Friends
Decent Wins: Cosby, South Lakes
Quality Losses: None

This Week: 5/2 vs. Washington-Liberty

5. Yorktown (7-4)

Results: Def. McLean 11-6

Analysis: Like Madison, Yorktown is peaking at the right time and overpowered McLean, giving them their worst loss of the season. Everything went right for the Patriots, from faceoffs to offense to defense to goaltending – it was a complete victory. Three easy stat-padding games to finish the season off 10-4. Yorktown will likely need to take down McLean again to face Langley in the district championships. The winner gets the #1 seed at Regionals and does not have to face Madison until the Region finals and the coveted State tournament berth.

Quality Wins: Broadneck, McLean, Patriot
Decent Wins: Oakton
Quality Losses: Robinson, Madison, Langley, The Heights

This Week: 4/29 @ Washington-Liberty, 4/30 vs. TJ, 5/2 vs. Herndon

6. Battlefield (9-1)

Results: Def. Osbourn 17-0, Lost to Patriot 8-7, Def. Westfield 12-10

Analysis: It’s a tale of two weeks. Last week we thought Battlefield was looking like the second best team in Class 6. This week, their goalie went down and everything changed. The Bobcats dropped a close one to Patriot and then almost lost another to lowly Westfield. They hold this spot based on their resume and win over McLean but if the Richmond-committed netminder doesn’t return ASAP Battlefield will lose to Freedom tonight and could struggle against Stone Bridge.

Quality Wins: Briar Woods, Independence, McLean
Decent Wins: None
Quality Losses: Patriot

This Week: 4/29 vs. Freedom, 5/1 @ Stone Bridge

7. McLean (10-4)

Results: Lost to Yorktown 11-6, Def. Lake Braddock 11-4

Analysis: For the first time this season, McLean’s defense looked totally overmatched by Yorktown’s offense, missing slides and giving away easy close-in looks. They get eleven days off and will need to watch some film to figure things out because they will likely seen the Patriots again in the district semifinals. Good bounce back win against Lake Braddock.

Quality Wins: Sidwell Friends
Decent Wins: Chantilly, Woodson, Lake Braddock
Quality Losses: Robinson, Langley, Battlefield, Yorktown

This Week: No games

8. Patriot (7-4)

Results: Def. Battlefield 8-7, Lost to Madison 15-3

Analysis: Patriot took down Battlefield in one of the biggest surprises of the season. They were primed to make a big move but followed up that win with a total dud against Madison, getting blown out of the water. Still, they are tied for second place in Cedar Run and will finish the season 9-4, with the only Quality Win among the remaining teams. The blowout losses to Madison and Yorktown makes us question whether or not they are a true contender, but the win over Battlefield and the close loss to Freedom earns them this spot.

Quality Wins: Battlefield
Decent Wins: South Lakes
Quality Losses: Freedom

This Week: 4/29 @ Unity Reed, 5/2 vs. Osbourn Park

9. Hayfield (10-0)

Results: Def. Mount Vernon 17-1

Analysis: One more win for Hayfield sets up the season finale match with 9-1 Justice for the National district title. We don’t think the Hawks are real contenders but it has been a great season and a real step forward for the program.

Quality Wins: None
Decent Wins: Chantilly, South County, South Lakes
Quality Losses: None

This Week: 5/2 @ Justice

10. West Potomac (8-4)

Results: Def. West Springfield 14-9

Analysis: West Potomac got a somewhat close win against West Springfield but did enough to control their destiny. A win over Woodson tomorrow gives them the #2 seed in the Patriot district tournament and the clearest path to the State tournament. A loss could cause chaos with a three way tie between West Potomac, Woodson, and South County. Common opponent analysis with Hayfield shows these teams are fairly similar and so the undefeated team gets the spot above West Potomac.

Quality Wins: None
Decent Wins: South County, Northern Calvert, Lake Braddock
Quality Losses: Madison

This Week: 4/30 vs. Woodson

Also Considered: Chantilly, Cosby, Deep Run, Oakton, South County, South Lakes, Westfield, Woodson

I would probably take the exact same teams, flip the Atlee result and otherwise agree.

Yep. All I'm saying is that whoever loses McLean/Yorktown in the district semi has to, still, feel pretty good...

I would still have Cosby at 9 or 10 in the most recent rankings despite the 2 losses to Langley and Robinson. They are solid abd would beat Hayfield and West Potomac.

Maybe. The problem is they have no real resume, as they have not beaten any even decent team this year. All they can say is that they did not lose to Atlee or Langley by too much.
