They are really an impressive group of boys. My wife went to the sister school of jockier school that believes itself a peer school. She said the STA boys were gentleman. The brother schools were not. Like NCS, its tough, they dont grade inflate, but the kids are close, respect each others talents, and are very diverse in their interests and talents. Under the shadow of the Cathedral, these kids seem to move on with strong values. The exmits are great, but more than that, they produce great people. Flame away. |
STA parent here, who seconds the comments above. Excellent school with an excellent ethos. |

Isn't this expected? How many are legacies? |
About what you'd expect I guess, but less impressive than TJ in FCPS. |
65% did not get into ivies? |
No, and 35% don't usually get in. Thus, the post's title, "Big College Admissions Year at St. Albans." |
Tjere were SEVERAL legacies this year bringing it up to the 35% (not all were...so congrats to those who earned it the hard way!).. |
Let's get one fact straight. It has become so competitive to get into certain Universities (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Standford & MIT) that even the most qualified applicants still aren't admitted into all the Universities. Legacies who are admitted to these Universities (except for a very small number whose parents have built buildings) are more than qualified and have the grades and scores to get in. Being a legacy difference maker in this situation. But, it's not a difference maker if the student is not qualified with the scores & being in a certain quadrant of their class. Or, the universities are confident that legacies at schools like St. Alban's, NCS, GDS, Maret, Holton have the scores & capacity to be successful at their respective institutions. This is where a high school's reputation & cache can be a difference maker for a legacy. |
NP. And, while being a minority is a "hook," unless you're qualified (gpa & test scores, etc) or a recruited athlete you're not getting in applying from STA/NCS. |
How many were National Merit Semi-Finalists? Just curious--- |
My math might be wrong, but... 20 out of 77 is 25%, not 35%. Still a great number. That puts St A's on par with the top NYC schools and Andover/Exeter for the first time this year. |
I can't locate that list on the website. However, there are 11 Finalists. This year's Presidential Scholar is a St Albans' boy. Go Bulldogs! |
The legacy pool has a higher admit rate because, on average, they are a more highly qualified pool than the general pool (which one would expect, given their parents' background/education/privilege). Unless you are a huge donor (in the $$ millions these days), being a run-of-the-mill legacy isn't going to do much to boost you. Unless there are multiple so-called "development cases" in this pool, I think all the boys deserve congratulations. |
I count 23. Where did this list come from? |
