Dr. Broquard/Lafayette

She probably will be able to deal with different groups of people. She probably was trained well at Hyde. Some kids have gone to Lafayette from Hyde to get into the Deal feeder path.

By the way, there are people that run major companies that are relatively young so her age won’t be a factor.

NEW PRINCIPAL ANNOUNCEMENT – WELCOME PRINCIPAL PRALL!

May 9, 2024
Dear Parents and Families of Lafayette Elementary School,

As we look to close out another remarkable school year at DC Public Schools (DCPS) and turn our focus toward School Year 2024-2025, I am excited to announce that Katie (Mustian) Prall has been selected as the next principal of Lafayette Elementary School! I want to thank Lafayette’s parents, families, and community members who participated in this process, giving their time and attention and providing compelling feedback on the selection of our new school leader.

Katie Prall joined DCPS in 2015 and served as an elementary school teacher at Ross Elementary School and Bruce Monroe at Park View Elementary before transitioning to work as a Community Action Team member with the DCPS Office of Family and Public Engagement. Before joining DCPS, Ms. Prall taught at the Vanderbilt demonstration school in Abu Dhabi, an experience that broadened her horizons and deepened her love for traveling.

In 2020, Ms. Prall became Hyde-Addison Elementary School’s Assistant Principal. At Hyde-Addison, she led the instructional and operations teams in implementing key initiatives that have resulted in high levels of family engagement, an inclusive and joyful school culture, and assessment results reflective of the school’s rigor. In 2022, the DC Public Education Fund recognized this work by awarding Hyde- Addison with the Building Bridges for Students and Families award. Ms. Prall is committed to creating sustainable change in our schools and systems to ensure equitable and excellent outcomes for our students.

Ms. Prall holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and Child Studies from Vanderbilt University and a Master of Education Policy and Leadership from Stanford University.

I am confident that the next phase of excellence at Lafayette will lead to the continued development and success of our scholars under the leadership of Principal Prall. I look forward to supporting her and the entire Lafayette community in preparation for next school year. If you have any questions, please email me at Andria.Caruthers@k12.dc.gov.

Sincerely,

Andria Caruthers

I'll get the popcorn.

Ms. Mustian is an amazing AP at Hyde-Addison. We will definitely miss her at Hyde.

She cannot be any younger than 34 looking at her Linked-in. Plenty of people in their 30's are capable of leading a school.

Have heard great things about her leadership and think she will be a strong asset for Lafayette, in particular for operations for a large school and for teacher morale and retention. Many of the strongest principals I have seen in my time in school leader work came in first as APs.

Katherine would be a great fit for any school. Unpopular opinion but being young does not mean that you will not be good a job. She has proven that she is able to run a school. Instead of us fixating on her age, we should look at the work she has done.

She’s fantastic. This is a big loss for Hyde. Lafayette is lucky to have her.

Thanks for weighing in Hyde families. It’s always a bit nervewracking to change principals, so I appreciate hearing your endorsement!

Dr. B is going to a more diverse school with some lower income beautiful children to help turn it around, increase academic standing while treating students fair, and address challenges coming with possible boundary change

Hyde assistant principal is coming from a diverse school to a less diverse school to take it to the next level and engage population more

Agreed. She’s amazing. Will definitely miss her, she’s kind of a rock star. Already exudes principal-level energy and leadership. Selfishly we will miss her. Our kid really likes her 😢

One other thing: given her age, you’ll probably get her for at least 7-10 years, assuming all goes well. That’s great for continuity.

As a LES parent, I am hopeful for a positive change but nervous about a principal with only 3 years of actual PS teaching experience - all of it PK-1 kids - before becoming an administrator, being able to contend with a school 3 times the size and with the hands-on parent community LES has.
