Fraternity Danger at UMD

I didn’t think it was elitism or unhealthy when my chapter had us visit a local poor school to read to the second graders on a rotating basis, but I appreciate your sexism and judgement.

You must be watching too much Netflix.

You went to The Poor School and read to them? Bless your heart.

NO, he's the best thing about UMD.

No need to set up this them and us mentality (let alone come up with rituals to humiliate and demean your future friends!).

Why does that even need to be said?

Name a single school that applies that to sports and I'll agree with you

Not the same. Fraternity is not a talent based organization.

I watched a documentary about a student who was drugged and gang raped by fraternity members as a freshman in the 80s. UVA did everything in their power to not have the case end up investigated by the police.

They told her that the police did not have jurisdiction over the fraternity house, only the UVA security could investigate. It’s too bad she believed that. She went to UVA medical center and they didn’t have rape kits. Just a lot of bad behavior on the colleges part.

It was a long time ago but it was happening before her and after her. This is one of many reasons why I wouldn’t want my child to go there.

You do know that every single college campus has probably had this happen, whether they are UVA or even have Greek houses or not. Athletic teams are famous for it.

Did you miss the part about what the university did? They lied to the victim and they have a long history of covering up the rapes. Some colleges have more than their fair share.

The University of Maryland has lifted the suspension of fraternity and sorority activity on campus for 32 chapters, clearing them to return to normal activities, the university announced Friday evening.

“Effective immediately, we are lifting the temporary pause on new member and alcohol-related activities, and related no-contact orders which the university issued on March 1, 2024. Thirty-two IFC and PHA chapters are cleared to return to normal activities,” the university said in a statement.

Five chapters remain under investigation “as a result of evidence suggesting involvement in hazing or other incidents that threatened the health and safety of our campus community,” the statement read.

The school did not name the chapters it’s still investigating. WTOP has reached out to the school for the chapters it’s still investigating.

The university released a list of chapters cleared to return to normal activities, which includes all 16 sororities affiliated with the Panhellenic Association. There are five fraternities listed on U.Md’s Interfraternity Council website that do not appear on the list of fraternities cleared by the school.

Those fraternities are listed below:

Kappa Alpha Order
Lambda Chi Alpha
Phi Sigma Kappa
Sigma Nu
Zeta Beta Tau

Pines needs to go. He is out of touch, to say the least. I was giving $1,000 a year until he came into office. Now I won’t give any.

Why is he out of touch? He is trying to make sure students are not harmed because of hazing. That, to me, suggests he is very much in touch. He's an excellent leader and I'm sure he won't miss your donation.

Update above to the case of the type of hazing that happened

This should not be happening in 2024. Get rid of them all, and refer perpetrators to law enforcement for prosecution for assault.

So, you never went to college or have any idea about fraternities?

On this basis (at least just your minimum standard of any underage drunkenness)…85% of all college students in the entire country will be expelled.

I find it laughable that a university allows fraternities/sororities, but is then somehow surprised (BTW they aren’t) that many have pledging rituals involving inordinate amounts of drinking.

"But mooom, everyone ELSE commits this crime!"

Fun fact: criminals tend to overestimate the popularity of their crime - it's a common defense mechanism.

Why did the students who were told to do these things not just say no and walk away?

Crying to the university president instead of growing a set and drawing a healthy boundary when some idiot tells you to do something stupid is how adults handle their problems.

I know this is harsh, but true.

Bullies are going to bully.

Were the kids involved literally being held hostage?

Why did they stay for this?

Just say no. What are they going to do, ball the whole pledge class?

The students have to police themselves.
This stuff is stupid and gross, but it will only happen as long as people go along with it.

OMG. No one is forcing them to drink. They are 18 and curious. Were you a nun at 18?

Also, I hate to burst your bubble, but non-Greek college students drink, too.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. These 5 have always had a reputation for being the worst for pledges and having parties where girls get drunk and taken advantage of. Even when I went there 25 years ago.

None of this stuff happening at UMD is new nor is it unique to UMD. This is why I refused to pledge. Why would I want to pay to be part of that? But I can assure you that plenty of people, the majority in fact, don’t pledge and still have an active social life with lasting friendships. There is no need to go Greek if it’s not your thing. And if it is…well, this is what you are signing up for.
