What's a Good Charity in Japan?

Anonymous
Something that's already got boots on the the ground and who can provide immediate help to earthquake victims? I am pretty familiar with good charities in most places, but have no clue about Asia. TIA.

Insert insensitive remark about purchasing a Toyota <here> sorry.

I don't know. I have an American relative who is an exchange student in Japan at the moment but beyond that, I only have only stupid jokes to ease my nervousness about my nephew (who is fine, thank goodness in Tokyo).

I would contribute to known international charities like the Red Cross or UNICEF.

thought i would share this info:

Japan

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said that it would provide $200,000 to the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. Japan also identified needs in affected regions via the U.S. government and provided up to $300,000 in emergency supplies such as tents, blankets and power generators if they receive requests from the U.S. for such assistance. One Japanese individual, Takashi Endo, donated USD 1 million from his personal funds to Katrina relief efforts.[13]

about how japan helped us during katrina.

Red Cross. They do a really terrific job in these disasters. Speaking from first-hand experience. They're big and very well organized and are almost always first on the ground.

Often, American rescue teams with dogs are sent to places where earthquakes and tsunami's have occurred. Fairfax County, I believe, has such unit. Otherwise, Red Cross, and, possibly, if you attend church, Temple, Mosque, donations will be taken up.

OP here. Thanks. I'm not a huge fan of Red Cross, but that's where I sent my money.

"Those who want to help can go to www.redcross.org and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. People can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific."

I donated through red cross. Thank you to the PP who sent the link about Katrina. The Japanese govt actually ended up contributing over 1 million, plus an additional 200K through the red cross, and that does not include the large donations from private citizens like the one you mentioned.

I love Japan and Japanese culture and am simply devastated by this. I hope many people help.

Salvation Army is one option.

Just texted to the Red Cross - thanks to the PP who posted that. It's small, but it makes me feel better.

I'm not a huge Red Cross fan, but will donate to them if that's the only option.

Any other suggestions would be great.

My church collected a very large sum this morning and will be sending it right away. I'm sure there are many churches and synagogues who will be doing the same.
