Feeling really desperate--Zofran not working?

Anonymous
I am 7 weeks pregnant and nauseous 24/7. I really feel like I can't take it anymore and if my previous pregnancy is any guide I have at least 8 more weeks of this to go. I don't vomit often (maybe once a day), just feel utterly miserable and dysfunctional. I'm worried this is triggering depression (I have a history).

I'm taking extra B6, using wristbands, and also have done a couple of sessions of acupuncture. I just started on Zofran yesterday and, if anything, felt worse. For those who have had success with Zofran, how much did you take and how often? How quickly did you feel relief? Anyone try Unisom? I would appreciate any and all advice please!!

I was in the same boat with #2 and also got depressed and anxious with how sick I was. My OB ended up prescribing me Ativan at night and Zofran in the morning and though it didn;t make it totally disappear, I was way more functional. I was able to wean off both at 20 weeks.

Do you remember how much Zofran? My prescription is for 4mg to take "as needed." What in the world could that mean? I need it to work!

Hi - I had to go on zofran pump to get the meds to work for me, that said, I also used Phergan at night b/c that was my worst time. It took me a day or two to figure out that my zofran dose needed to be bumped up and they bumped it up quickly and then put me on the pump ( that's another thing entirely, hope you won't have to go there! ) I think they make them in 8 or 10 mg tablets also. Give it another day and see. I was vomiting up to 10 times a day and totally feel your pain. the meds need to do what they're supposed to do! check with your doc about phenergan also, I loved that it helped me sleep and could take both at once.

PP here - the night time drug is phenergan, not phergan.. sorry! That baby is 4mths old now and clearly I'm not sleeping much.

My Zofran prescription is for 8 mg every 8 hours. I also take Phenergan at night. I really like the Phenergan, as PP said, because it helps with the nausea AND with sleeping. Zofran hasn't been a magic bullet for me, but it gets me from "totally nonfunctional" to "semi-functionality"

OP here. Thanks for sharing your experience. I am currently at the "totally nonfunctional" state, so your trajectory is encouraging. I think my Zofran dose is too low and I may ask my doctor about Phenergan if increased Zofran doesn't help.

I'm grateful for the encouragement, only someone who has experienced this can understand how the misery just overwhelms you. My husband threw up once the other night (brief stomach bug) and just seemed so debilitated by it that it made me feel angry and resentful, like he has insufficient empathy for what it feels like to be in that condition day after day, week after week with no relief in sight...thanks for listening.

You must be my long lost twin. I'm also 7 weeks PG with #2 and have been barfing like it's my day job. I spend all day feeling like I have severe stomach flu--horribly nauseated and weak. I got a prescription for 4 mg of Zofran 3 times a day, and haven't found it to do much of anything. In fact, I just barfed up my afternoon dose. I wish I could do more than commiserate; maybe it's not a miracle drug for everyone.

In some Zofran will relieve vomiting but not nausea, where in others it works for both. Sometimes people combine it with Phenegran for this reason.

I've said it before, but have any of you tried acupuncture? That stuff is amazing!

OP, make sure you stay hydrated. Once you dehydrate, nothing will work until you have IVs. I suffered from Hyperemesis until I was 6 months preggo with DC#2 (it was the same for DC#1). I bought ketone sticks from the pharmacy to measure my hydration. I was on 8mg of Zofran plus Reglan and OTC Benadryl. The combo of the 3 seemed to work. The Phenergen was not effective for me and knocked me out too much of the time. Good luck!

I feel for you ladies. .
I am 7 months now so I am over the sickness but I was so I'll the first 3 months. It's like hell on earth. To be honest, nothing helped me but time.

Make sure to get the dissolving zofran pills rather than the ones you have to swallow. This way if you do vomit you don't vomit the medicine up too.

If your DH is like my DH, he will be good practice for dealing with a whiny child While I love my DH more than anything, when he is sick, he acts like a 5 y/o who is dying. I feel your pain! Definitely check to see if you can get our dosage raised, once you get it figured out you will feel better. Ginger is also great to help with nausea (assuming you can get something down). My friend got the small chrystalized ginger cubes and ate one every hour while she was awake, seemed to really help.

OP here--despite my best efforts ended up in the ER today with hypermesis dehydration. And...no fetal heartbeat. So, now I am waiting for a D&C and yet still totally sick. Sigh. Anyone else have this?
