Reality check - Columbia Heights version

WHAT has been accomplished with those "surged resources" from DOJ? They sent investigators and experienced prosecutors and USAO prosecution rates are still far below pre-covid levels. Maybe time to clean house at USAO. Are career prosecutors focused on the goal of public safety?

Shooting in Dupont Circle last night. Guy kicked out of Decades (people still go there apparently) came back with a gun and shot 5 people. Thankfully there was a quick response by MPD and Secret Service and an arrest was made.

Even in the 90s Dupont was pretty safe. Like Union Station.

Not actually down. Was a very short lived pattern that was seized on as a propaganda point.

What IS down is USAO prosecution rates, still far below pre-covid levels, even with DOJ "surged resources." Graves has said that restoring prior rates is NOT a goal. The DC Crime Facts Substack and X account cite case after case where USAO did not prosecute and the suspect later kills. The laxity just seems to embolden criminals.

That poor woman needs HELP - substance abuse and mental health treatment, this is inhumane. A monthly voucher is still far less than 1 day of treatment at St. E's, look up the rates for yourself. It's all dressed up as progressive but this woman is clearly ill.

It's a disaster for families who used to live in buildings along Connecticut and Wisconsin for the schools. And for retirees who are stuck living next to the drug addicts and criminals who are prioritized for vouchers.

Don't believe the hype about how things are stabilizing in DC, they are not. The city squanders money with little to no oversight. The woman in the article is a human being. She may also be being exploited by her "boyfriend" imo.

This "don't listen to people who say crime is down" idea seems a little much -- even horrific crimes don't mean that overall crime/even overall violent crime can't be down. No one is claiming crime has been ERADICATED, so I don't see how any given shooting is supposed to somehow prove that crime is dropping.

I'm not trying to minimize crime or suggest that it's not bad, I'm just saying, I don't think it's particularly helpful to say that our feelings or worries about crime mean that the numbers are invalid.

Crime is significantly higher than in the 2010s. No one can take any comfort in a crime reduction until it reaches those levels.

Personally, I'm glad to see crime dropping from last year's highs, even if it's still too high. Dropping but still up from the 2010s is better than continuing to rise.
