We used it for DC #1 as a bassinet in our bedroom. My brother and SIL are using it now for their new baby. We had a huge first baby, off the charts for both height and weight (and his footprint didn't fit in the box on the paper!). Still, DC fit in the travel lite crib for four months. Then went to crib in own room. You don't need any extra padding, baby beds are supposed to be firm. We did use a waterproof mattress pad underneath the sheet. It's a necessity for those middle of the night diaper blowouts. It'll save you from having to wash off the mattress.
